Just found out about this. Apparently if you uninsure a car, you need to declare it SORN at the same time.

I bought a new car on Sunday and transfered the insurance from my old one. I didn't declare it SORN at the time as I figured it would be worth keeping it taxed in case I sell it and a potential buyer wanted to test drive it on a temporary policy.

What's the likelihood of me getting a fine here? The car was uninsured and not taxed from Sunday lunchtime until Wednesday afternoon when I declared it SORN.

For such a short period of time I very much doubt you will be fined.

Surely it depends on where the car is parked?

If it's on a private drive or in a private garage I would have thought insurance was not mandatory?

Obviously if it gets nicked, or burns to the ground, you don't have a policy to claim on. But surely there is no offence in having no insurance?

I think it has to be insured to be parked in a public place. If it is on your drive or in your garage it can be sorn.

True. But if it's not insured, it has to be SORNed. Apparently.

My car is off the road on private land.

Thanks all for the responses. I figured I'd probably be okay, but wondered if anyone had been nicked for such a short period as presumably all the data is available to the DVLA electronically.

If you leave it ages, as in 3-4 months then you'll possibly get a letter about it so for now I suspect it'll fine.

I can only relate forgetting to change my number plate on a car and eventually the DVLA sent me a letter saying it wasn't insured but it must have been nearly 6 months. I changed the plate on the policy and all sorted but they were treating it as uninsured based on the reg, which makes sense.

As per the thread title, every car that's taxed has to be insured. The only way to avoid it is to SORN the car.

From comments I've seen elsewhere, they send a reminder after a month. It seems if you ignore that then you get a penalty.
