Previous Jersey Registered Car
Discussion
I wonder if I could pick the collective brains of the Pistonheads collective.
I've just sold my car and I've found a 2007 Audi A4 Avant, 114k, very close to me for sale and agreed a price with the current owner for £2k.
Partial history including a cambelt 5 years ago.
My main query is that it was originally registered in Jersey and onyl came over a year or so to England, no MOT history except for the current one, nor against its previous Jersey registration. There was apparently no requirement until Brexit to have an MOT for Jersey registered cars.
Do I just take the gamble, as worse case its only £2k and seems in good condition or do I listen to me being cautious and walk away?
I'll probably have the same questions from any seller should I wish to sell it on in a year or so...

You are correct that there was no MOT in Jersey so there were some pretty shonky cars running around there (same as Isle of Man). I'll be honest, I hadn't realised that there now is a requirement). At this end of the market, I would not worry about the paperwork in terms of MOT history and would go mainly on the condition of the car, including all the suspension components and chassis condition. Get it up on a lift if you can. If you are not mechanically minded, get someone who is to look at it with you. What colour are taxis in Jersey? This is a silver A4 Avant, can't believe there would be many15+ year old taxis there but I've never been, perhaps I need to get Jim Bergerac on the case....
Maybe the pictures are very old, but this 2015 article has a pretty old Merc Estate in the second picture, and show the cars in a range of colours: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-jersey-351...alscar said:
I think forget about the mileage and paperwork and judge on condition and how it drives.
Could have previously been a hire car given that 7k annual Jersey mileage.
People do leave Jersey and go to the mainland, we have a client in Jersey and the car spends more time here.Could have previously been a hire car given that 7k annual Jersey mileage.
I assume it has history, if concerned call the garage that did it, they might be helpful and put your kind at rest.

It's a £2k 100k mile car.
What exactly are you expecting? Full main dealer service history, 12 months unlimited mileage warranty, full tank of fuel and a new set of Michelin Pilot Sports?
I think you need to manage your expectations. It's shed money.
Thanks Jordie, I think I was more surprised initially that Jersey didn't have an MOT requirement or similar... perhaps its more that laid back approach...What exactly are you expecting? I've had plenty of sheds and enjoy the challenge of keeping one on the road and for as long as possible and for little money..
