Thought about posting this in the potholes thread - for balance - but I think it really needs a thread of its own.

They are almost without exception brilliant. It's instant the moment you cross the border. Why?

It is really quite noticeable. I assume down to a lower population/less wear to the road surfaces. It is very obvious when heading over to Cheshire or Surrey how much better the general quality of the roads is here in North Wales.

Not sure what the relative spend per head of population is in the different areas but it would be interesting to know.

They are regularly working on the roads here in North Wales. We moved here 10 years ago, the first thing we noticed were the better road surfaces, and the frequency they work on them - usually before the ‘summer season’.

Its population and traffic density.

There are apparently over 10m people living inside the M25, and only 3.2m in Wales. I can often drive 50 miles across Snowdonia and see very few cars on the way.

When I first moved from Fleet to the north Wales border I was really impressed by the road condition, 12 years later they are in a far worse condition, but still far better than most of south east I have seen over the last few years.
