I've had both!

In once case it cracked as the repairer was injecting the resin.

In another it cracked about a week later.

In most cases they've been fine and the windscreen has then stayed in the car until I've sold it.

Most of mine are replaced once I've got so many micro-chips in them that any combination of water & sun will make it almost opaque.

In the past, I've had 2 repairs and within a week of each repair, both spread and needed a new windscreen. However, Glassman says that it is down to the guy doing the job so maybe I've just been unlucky.

Thanks guys. So how many cracks have been filled without ever having an issue?

Reason for asking is my car is booked in on Tuesday for a crack to be filled (outside of insurance) and the repair place warned me about the risk of the crack spreading. Its £100 for the resin, or £1200 for a new screen frown

Not sure enough guys have the skill and kit to sort a crack out, I will get chips filled (DIY seems as good as insurance approved repairers to be honest) but have tended to let cracks develop and then get a new screen.

If your windscreen is cracked, it needs to be replaced.

If your windscreen is chipped, it can be repaired.

How bad is the crack? When is your insurance renewal due? If you can, just wait until it’s due, then pick a policy with windscreen cover, it’s usually only around £100 excess for a new screen. The only fly in the ointment is if your MOT is due before your insurance renewal.

There is a risk of the damage worsening during the attempt to repair. There is also a chance the un-repaired chip could crack. It's more than these variables but broadly speaking, much of this depends on the type of break, the temperature inside the cabin v temp outside; terrain, style of driving and ultimately when it comes to attempting a repair the experience (and equipment) of the technician.

The rule of thumb, however, is not that any chip might crack, but more about some types of chip - or where they are on the screen - could travel when the repair is attempted.

OP: do you have an image of the break?

Is the damage already a crack rather than a chip that could possible develop into crack??

I’d replace it if cracked (especially during bad weather), insurance usually covers most of it. Chips I can live with, up to a point.

Hi guys.
Sorry for the slow reply.

So basically i live in France and my insurance has just changed over and i need to sell the car ASAP (cars need an MOT equivilant to have been done within the last 6 months).

Im selling the car because i have a new car due to be delivered in 1.5 months and insurance is already likely to be eye watering.

The chip is about the size of a 50p, and has been there for about 10 months without getting bigger (through heat, cold, fast motorway driving and jacking the car up and strange angles, and it hasnt spread).

Anyway, its booked in tomorrow for the chip repair (not really sure what the difference is between a chip and a crack) and i have been told if the crack spreads ill have to buy a new screen, so ill watch them like a hawk.

Ill try to update tomorrow.

They said that without looking at the damage?

“Watch them like a hawk”

What happens if it spreads? What are you going to do about it? Even if you are “watching them like a hawk”. It’s not their fault - these things can happen sometimes. You should have appropriate insurance in place if you don’t want to pay the price of a replacement screen.

Jesus. Ill pay for a screen if it breaks. Obviously im watching like a hawk because they have a massive incentive to crack the glass further

Nope. I took it to them. But my French isnt great so maybe i miss some details. The gist was that they can repair it but there is a risk it spreads the crack

that sounds like insurance fraud to my uneducated mind

It would be interesting, and for the benefit of anyone else in a similar situation, to see an image of this great job (especially comparing it to before the repair). But you're happy...
