Question for JR really - John, what''s the Police line on plate/letter size? Another thread in general TVR gossip is going on abiout using small plates/letters at the front. I have seen a Chimp with a small sticker type plate on the front of the bonnet. What can we "get away" with at the front?

DVLA's website is brill for the "official party line" on numberplates some interesting facts about manufacturers names and BS kitemarks as well !!!! It also covers the new mid "Y" font change the stupid EU badges and all the other stuff on spacing, fonts and making words with fixing screws etc. http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks.htm. sorry couldn't get hyperlink thing to work !! We have had a few posts on this one before. the Police line on ita nd also DVLA's seeing as we have to enforce it is if you misrepresent your plate in any way you get a ticket, we also photograph it (providing we have a camera to hand) this goes off to DVLA they send you out a warning and the next time you are caught with it misrepresented they revoke it, without giving you any compensation at all. My view no plates are there to identify the car quickly and easily if a want to do a word search I buy a puzzle book. My reasons for this are simple I have wasted too much time trying to trace owners of cars who have chosen to play around with their no plates. The british system is a good system but it is being spoilt by a small minority who choose to abuse it then kick off when they get done.

Personally, I think the British system is garbage. There is far too much snobbery involved in having the latest issued number plate or these cretins with personal plates that are altered. By far the best system in my opinion is the Swiss one, you are issued with a plate when you pass your test and keep it for life.

Oh those long hours sat at the side of the road !!! Mind you at least if you can identify them quickly you can get back to the puzzle book quicker. Edited by mel on Friday 3rd August 08:44

Spring latch ah !!!!!!! Wouldn't bloody work over here then they'd be nicked every ten minutes and there'd be as many by the side of the roads as wheel trims !!!! Also what about things like Police Cars, Lorries, Milk Floats, Armoured Cars, Light Tanks, and Combine Harvesters do they expect you to use your own plate on other vehicles ????

Shouldn't have started this one should I !!!!! I guess the other vehicles are just registered to the business/government etc. They certainly look the same. Oh, they don't have milk floats either

John, I understand your view...but where do you stand on the fact that the DVLA withhold certain plates for sale at auction...which blatantly require a certain amount of misspacing/different fonts etc to read whatever the word is...and then throw a massive fit if you do in fact mis-space to get your 'value for money'? It strikes me as utterly hypocritical! Night p.s. I dont have any personalised plates so have no personal interest!

Ross Do they really have to walk over all those Mountains to get their milk every morning from the shops ?????? Or do they have a Goat each and maybe only drink fresh goat milk. Whats this got to do with private plates ???? I don't know but maybe they have to register their goats. Do they do private goat plates and how do they police that ??? John have you ever nicked a goat for a mis placed plate or even just having saggy tits ??? Oh god you can tell its Friday. Have a good weekend bye. Oh yes its POETS day.

Mel, Believe me, its a VERY strange country, anythings possible. Get this, when I lived over there, I needed a parking permit to use the bay outside of my appartment. Easy enough you may think; apply for permit, get permit, park car ? Nope... They only issue permits to cars registered at the address where the bay is so out of towners dont use them & park for free when they commute in. My car was UK registered i.e. not registered at the address so no permit !! @rse Like I was going to drive all the way from London every day & then worry about 5 quid to park in the city. As I said, its a very strange country but some of their ideas do have a bit of logic attatched. Edited by rossc on Friday 3rd August 14:33

Maybe they just wanted to keep the bay clear so that you could tether your goat there as it was obviously no bloody good leaving it for the milk man to park in.
