A question for Prince Charming (his previous login was much more subtle marc100) I'll shout across the office. He bought a new battery yesterday.

Thanks Ellingtj (great name by the way). Yeah, I got the info from Steve Heath's bible. It needs to be an 072 battery type with at least 630amp cold crank rating (which apprently most of them have).

I got quotes from 50quid for 1 year warranty up to 80quid for 4 years warranty. I went for the 2 year.....

I bought my last one from Halfords. They didn't have a 630A version so I bought a 590A. Seemed to work with no problems, even over winter, on a Chimaera 4.0.

I dunno if the Griff's 5.0 lump needs more starting effort than a 4.0 though. Steve?

The guy I bought it off said that there are different standards depending on where the battery was manufactured - I think the 590A is not the cold-crank rating but a different measure of performance (SSA or something like that). He seemed to think that they were all pretty similar.....

Not particularly but the smaller crank batteries tend not to last that's all.

I use 2 440 Crank amp race batteries on the 520. The car will do 0-60 in about 10 seconds on just the starter alone It does run a 11.5:1 CR though

The battery spec and details are in the Griff sample chapter on my website BTW if anyone else wants them.

Make sure the battery case you buy has a handle...they are very heavy and once you have put the new battery in the battery box, it will be difficult to get it out again without a handle.

TAKE MY ADVICE!!!
BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE SCREWS THAT GO THROUGH THE CAR FLOOR AND HOLD THE BATTERY BOX IN PLACE MARK THE LOCATION OF FRONT CORNERS OF THE BOX WITH TIPEX ON THE CAR FLOOR. OTHERWISE IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PUT THE SCREWS BACK IN ONCE YOU HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY!

Also, don't forget to replace the rivets on the battery box cover with screws. The rivets are soft and easily drilled out...

Whilst you are grovelling around in the footwell replacing the battery...why not wire in battery charger connections.

I did my Griff over Christmas. Great excuse to escape the inlaws! Used a positive (+)mate first-last break connector with ring terminals soldered to a piece of 6A wire and a socket under the passenger seat.

Realy neat solution...just reach under the seat, flip the socket forward and plug my 4A float charger straight in...no more grovelling for me!

Bt the way I bought a Gunson Gold temperature compensated charger...a bit pricey, but it works really well!

Great advice Toffer - pity I did mine at the week-end before I read it. Doh! Why didn't I think of the Tipex? Anyhow, it went pretty smoothly with the help of a mate...

What you didn't read the bible or the sample chapter
I suggest using a marker pen to make the alignement marks. And don't forget to seal the bolts otherwise the battery will be floating in its own personal swimming pool!

Does the battery have to be an 072 or is there a battery with a bit more ooomph or more CCA in the same pacakge. Or is the 072 just refer to the dimensions or ... or...
Also, (I'm at work at the moment so can't see) does anyone know what side the terminals are on....ie + front left - front right or is it the other way round ?
