So apparently the ’07 Boxster S engine has been increased in size from 3.2 to 3.4 litres and develops 295 bhp (217 kW) at 6,250 rpm (up 15 bhp) + and 340 Nm of torque.

Now the very first 996 was 3.4 with 300 bhp ? So what does nearly 10 years of development on that engine give us ? 5bhp less ? Perhaps the torque is a better picture ?

what gets me is that it's still 5bhp less than Porsche managed to get from 3.4 litres nearly 10 years ago.

But fuel economy is better as are emissions - the ten year old engine wouldn't be legal today??

I remember when many were asking why the Boxster S wasn't 300bhp when it was launched. Now it is and people still aren't happy! 300hp in an opened top 2 seater? Sounds a perfect combination to me.

Guys if Porsche wanted to get 400bhp out of a 2 litre engine they could, they have the engineering knowledge to do it, they just choose not to.

They probably have an aversion to releasing a boxter that has more power than what some would still consider a current 911?

Well, that's the same as:

BMW - 335i, M3?
Audi - A4, S4, RS4?
Jaguar - XK8, XKR?

I think there is some deliberate psychological thing for customers where 300 plus bhp is currently reserved for the 911 (or VW tank thing with V8)...?

Cayman is the prime example fitting neatly between the boxtster and the 911, so i do think Porsche will hold off for a few years until the Boxster has a startling increase in power

Maybe there'll be an announcement for the Cayman S - 320hp?

but that would mean the 997 would have to go up 20bhp as would the 997S

Agree completely. Only thing lacking with the 987S I drove was torque. Should be just the ticket.

With the 997 Cab being substantially heavier, but only 30bhp up, would doubt there's much between them in performance now. The 997 non-S needs a power hike..

Well, there should be a facelift 997 soon. It's been out 2 years, so another year maybe and as with the 996, the engine ouputs will be raised.

I think they'll hold off until the 911 (or its replacement) gets an 8 Cylinder engine. Then the true BHP capabilites of the boxster/Cayman/Carrera models line-up can be realised/rationalised. Until then, prepare to be spoon fed carefully prepared BHP/Torque recipes for the foreseeable model ranges...

Nail, hit, head.
Marketing plays a much bigger role in Porsche today than it did in yesteryear.
I remember when the 944 Turbo was treading on the toes of the air cooled "legendary" 231 Bhp 3.2 Carreras, and with it's 'inherently better drivetrain' layout overall.....was achieving better reviews and getting good sales- at the expense of the hand made car?

Once bitten......
