Hi All,

After a fair bit of sun shine driving today I came home and noticed a fair old leak coming from the engine of my 996. It seems to be coming from the offside rear (around the exhaust, but not from the actual exhaust). It seems a little oily, but not thick enough to be engine oil. No warning lights are on on my dash so I'm a little confused as to what it could be, is this a common problem or anyone else had this?

Any feedback would be appreciated, I have had the car a month and it is covered under a Porsche Warranty (due to expire/renew next month).

Thanks!

John

Is it green ?
Could it be coolant ???
If so sounds like the your coolant tank is split. Common fault not covered by warranty.

Unlikely to be coolant tank. It's on the other side and it doesn't take much to leak out before the red light flashes. It may be power steering fluid as the tank is closer to the offside and i think pentosil/in is green. Pull the cap and see what your levels like.

- the power steering fluid expands when hot and the overflow pipe usually dumps it straight onto the ground - should only happen if overfilled when cold. Perhaps the high ambient temp + lots of corners made it heat up more than normal ? Pentosil is indeed dark green.. Let hope that's what it is... AS Denis has said check the level - it should be 'just' on the marker when cold.

Thanks for the replies, it appears I have my offside and nearside confused (oops!) - it is on the side of the coolant tank, I checked it and it is empty. I had this about a week ago and the light was flashing, filled it up and thought no more of it - it's empty again so maybe it is a split coolant tank. How much will this dent my wallet? Is it ok for me to drive it if I fill it up and take it in, the coolant light wasn't flashing this time - I just noticed a large amount of liquid under the car on my drive.

Thanks again!

About £200 fitted at an indie. It's a reasonable DIY job if you're competent with the spanners.

you seem to be as bad with your left and right as I am.
There was a post on 911uk suggesting an OPC will charge ~500 for sorting a leaking coolant tank.
The part is £150 alone apparently.

If you can get it done for £200 then suggest you go this route - I did it myself and it is a b*&ch of a job - and that's following Renntech's guide .. Got the satisfaction of doing it myself but parts are £150+ (don't forget the new style cap - ending 01) so for £50 labour on top it is a no brainer ...

If the OP is in Cambridgeshire then TWG in Peterborough are very reasonable and did a good job of mine.

Thanks again for the replies, I phoned Porsche Colchester and they have been a big help, I've only had the car a month so the process is a bit new to me. Porsche Assistance are coming to collect my car, which is great as I'm 45 mins from the OPC Plus they are going to deliver me a courtesy car (not sure which one's you normally get, but they said as I'm under 25 it won't be from their prestige agents, boohoo).

Great service though!
