Does anyone know when it first became available?

Wondering if its possible that my 1989 944 S2 has it.

Cheers,
Bryn.

Check your handbook or options stickers as a first port of call. My 89 Turbo has it, so its possible, I suppose.

No handbook and the sticker on the back panel has peeled off too... doh!

Will Porsche dealers give you the spec from the VIN or are they too busy selling new cars to bother with something this old and inexpensive?

Cheers,
Bryn.

I thought it was first available on the 250bhp 944 Turbo.

I'm sure it could have it. My '88 Turbo S does. Not sure that its very common on an S2 though. Have a look at your front struts - the M030 option has yellow Konis with adjustable spring seats and also a slot at the top (under a rubber dust cover) for adjusting the damping.

I think it's possible, but S2's with it on are rare. If you were buying such a car new, you would be unlikely to choose the not-quite-top-of-the-range model and then spec it up with flash suspension, you'd be much more likely to spend the extra pennies on the top-spec turbo - non?

I have never seen, read or even heard of an '89 S2 with M030, but I have seen a few '90 and '91 S2 with M030.

There was both M474 and M030 as sport optional suspension equipment and perhaps M474 was considered good enough (or expensive enough ?) for most buyers. M474 was no longer available in '90 and '91.

Interesting - never heard of M474. What was it?

M474 on S2 :
1/ rebound adjustable Koni yellows all round
2/ slightly shorter and (very) slightly stiffer than stock front springs

M030 on S2 :
3/ rebound + height adjustable front Koni yellows + rebound adjustable rear Koni yellows (all four valved stiffer than M474's)
4/ special front springs with progressive rate + bigger rear torsion bars
5/ 944 turbo 250bhp (928 S4/GT) front brakes
6/ 944 turbo '90/'91 D90 wheels (slightly wider than S2 standard D90 wheels ; identical to '90 928 S4/GT D90 wheels minus tyre pressure sensors)
7/ 40% limited slip differential (Optional equipment M220) came automatically along when M030 was specified
8/ Different suspension bushings (supposed to be stiffer ?) that became stock fitting for the last model year ('91).

Points 5/ and 6/ suggest that M030 was not available on the S2 until '90 as :
- the slightly wider D90 wheels were not originally fitted to the 944 turbo & 928S4/GT before '90
- the parts catalogue specifically mentions the bigger front brakes to be part of M030 equipment for the S2 only from year '90-on ; that litterally means '89 M030 did not include the bigger front brakes ; to me that means M030 was simply not available on the S2 for '89, but that remains a guess.

Does that make sense ? nerd

Wow great stuff thanks Thom clap

Been out for a look under the bonnet and the strut tops appear to be normal and non-adjustable so no M030 I don't think. Will jack it up and check for LSD at the weekend.

I was curious because its quite an unusual spec with no sunroof and air con so thought it might have had some other goodies specced.

Cheers,
Bryn.
