Track car weights
Discussion
I have read the manufactures figures but I was wondering how much heavier GT3s actually are compared with the air cooled RS models. I guess many track cars will have been corner weighted at some point or weighed for other reasons. So does anyone have any data as to their cars actual real life weight?
I know 9Ms 993 is 1180kg (it says so in Total 911 so it must be true) and my C2 is slightly less. IIRC Mel saying his cup car was 1130kg.
Anyone else?

9Ms car is beautifully prepared but far from standard - Carbon doors etc.. The 993 and 964 boys will tell you exactly what the cars weigh, but I think that a 993RS is around 1250 - 1290KG with the ultra rare (and ultra beautiful) RSR's at around 1210KG? As far as the GT3 is concerned, the non aircon Parr RS - fitted with rear cage and extinguisher and half a tank of feul came in at 1330kg. This was exactly the same weight as Gary Bullen's GT3MK1 club sport (also with rear cage but without extinguisher) Aircon adds 30KG - a lot of the weight being over the engine - and represents a substantial weight gain. You can get a 996RS under 1300KG AKA 993RS if you change the steering wheel - you will be amazed at the weight of an airbag wheel - removing the boot and interior carpets and trim (not roof lining) and changing the battery to a light weight unit. There are a few other tricks that save about 20 more KG and then it gets expensive.
If you are serious about tracking a GT3 as a long term proposition, you would certainly save considerably on consumables if the car was paired down to 1300kg. At 1370kg, you are effectively carrying a passenger every time you track the car, wearing tyres and brakes accordingly.
Hope this babble helps

Tony,
I had both my cars corner weighted at Tech 9 motorsport(the Norths equivelent of Parr).
993RS..(Standard car with Clubsport Spoiler pack and 1/2 cage = 1260kgs
GT3RS..(standard car with full cage and extinguisher, Air con = 1406kgs
Both cars had less than a 1/4 tank of fuel.
Hope this helps a little.

Steve - any idea what the GT3 cup cars come in at weight wise? (996 & 997)

Not sure Steve. I only have weights with a driver included so couldn't give a definitive but circa 1100kg.

Big difference...nearly two passengers...no wonder the 996 is slower round corners and only marginaly quicker in a straight line

A 996 GT3 Cup is about 1170 isn't it?

1180 inc driver. They seem to struggle around a race track quite well though. Quicker in genral than say a multi million pound touring car. The 997 is about 1.5 seconds quicker than the 996 on basically the same power output. Not bad for a fat porker I suppose. Maybe chasis/suspension and drive train dynamics have moved on a little after all. Mind you, the air cooled cars are obviously better though. They just dont make em like they used too

I'm not going to let my absence get in the way of my gloating

Ok fair enough!
I certainly admire the humility of certain 993RS drivers on the day, the fastest car round the turn by a reasonable margin and not a single gloat.....just to be expected I suppose

Or a measuring error?
Actually quite interested in this - did he repeat it more than once as I was lead to believe it was a big speed differential over all the other cars there. Also how was it measured?
Done that corner lots of times in various cars, but can't for the life of me remember what speed I make it round at.
Hi Paul,
Actually that is an interesting point because the "Left hand bend" discipline was the only test of the 3 where a driver gained no advantage from extra horse power!
To get a fast time you needed, great brakes combined with high corner speeds.
Oh and it helped if you where mad as a frog too

Hi Dan,
It was my 993 and just to clarify my times for the 3 runs were:-
1st run = 85mph (winning time)
2nd run = 88mph (Red Flagged)
3rd run = 84mph
So perhaps not too much of a fluke

John,
Gotta admit that your speed through that bend was stunning... amazing that no one else - including the 964RS boys - got within 7mph... Even Andy only managed 84mph in Dean's GT3RS! Mind you, everyone was bouncing off that inside line...
Congrats!

Ha ha... Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat..
Brilliant!!! Come on Dan, what'dya say to that then?!
Dan, I understand the fastest speed Mr Walsh has had through that turn was in an Elise and impressive as John's runs were, he was nowhere near Walshes best. As an ex Elise owner I am sure you can understand the advantage of a lighter and correctly damped car for a discipline such as the turn?
Nice one John
I am going to have to get some practice in......I will have to think up an excuse as to why the same car with a full cage potentially helping the suspension is in fact slower...HHhhmm!
