I have heard that these have a high failure rate - any experiences?

Mine has split and Porsche warranty say not covered as `wear & tear
item'. Want to charge £260 to supply and fit.

They say as the reservoir gets hot and cold you should expect to
change it during life of car - mine is less than 5 years old with
39000 miles on!

Vauxhall & Mercedes warranties would cover such a thing but Porsche
seem intent on ripping me off.

Last month I had to spend £300 + on 2 new key remote controls as
they had failed - same wear & tear excuse from Porsche.

Are they now using cheaper components on their cars?

Spoke to Porsche GB but no customer service there - just expect you
to pay up and keep buying their cars.

It's enough to make you sell up - Porsches aint what they used to be.

Hello

yes coolant header tanks are a weak point on the car have done many of them over the years now.

Suprised its a wear and tear item....how does it wear its not like tyres or breaks..

Have you got a copy of your warranty book that tells you what is and what is not covered...?

Looked at warranty book and gives a very short list of items covered - only includes temp sensor, thermostat, coolant pump and fans - certainly not the `quality cover' sold by the OPC - buyer beware!

I am surprised.

Perhaps a word in your OPC service managers ear may help. What they are saying is akin to telling us all that RMS is a wear and tear item.....

Mine went while in the Spanish Pyrenees a couple of weeks ago.

I took it out with basic tools, patched up with araldite and wire mesh (extracted from a kitchen seive).

This worked a treat for 1000miles to Germany where we discovered that the nurburgring made the engine bay temp go above the melting point of araldite at which point smoke was bellowing from the engine cover louvres and coolant was pouring out.

Made it home without incident keeping an eye on temp guage as the crack was just around the minimum level on the tank.

Anyway, I believe this is a pretty common problem not covered under OPC waranty. I dont have one anyway so no first hand advice.

Secondly I got a new tank for £58 + VAT from OPC Reading and will be fitting myself (about 2-3hrs work), a bit awkward but OK.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I'd suggest you ring OPC Reading then, I must say it surprised me too.

Got the invoice here - £58 +VAT for 996.106.157.03 which I'm told is the latest incarnation of this thing.

Cheers

Strange, because everyone else I tried was that price and I just phoned OPC on the off chance and nearly fell off my chair when it was half the price.

Must be right because they quoted me a couple of days ago and that was the price when I paid today.

I greatly admire your ingenuity, but please note that leaking coolant is a common contributing factor to serious accidents at the 'Ring.

Didnt know that, thanks for letting me know

When I say pouring out, it only started doing it when the car was running whilst standing still in the car park and it stopped again when below the crack so only a litre or so lost. Once noticed that it was leaking again we finished up the result of which is I have a ticket with 3 laps left on it. Best visit again later in the year then!

Tank replaced today no problem
