996 TT road going ability.
Discussion
I know this is an old and tired discussion regarding the merits of the 996tt versus gt3's/gt2's where i stand firmly in the tt camp as a better/faster road car.I just wondered if anyone had read GT Porsche magazine this month.A certain writer in the magazine has owned and used a 9966tt for 4 months and says,i quote 'Having owned this car and a 996gt2 last year, there is no doubt which is quicker over the Welsh A-B roads i use,and it isnt the GT2.The turbo is a brilliant road car,and unsurprisingly it makes the GT2 feel over-stiff,nervous,and unduly heroic for daily driving'.Obviously i agree with the author on this after owning GT3,using a Gt2 and now running a 996tt.The GT3 mafia claims that the tt is a bloated, heavy, understeering cruiser for Grandads dont appear to be correct in other peoples views as well as mine....now wheres my pipe and slippers?
A 996tt is no doubt a very fast car....but has alot of driver aids ...like psm and 4 wheel drive helping you....in my opinion its a grand tourer WAIT ....it has the best of all worlds its fast, reliable, easy to drive and can go around town every day no problems with the power assisted clutch it has...but if i was going to pay that much money for a car i would want something that felt like it was going to kill me....not something grandma could jump in and drive.....
Here we go ive asked for a pasting now by everyone with a 996tt....its just my views after driving all 3 of them.
thanks

I agree, that's why a 993tt gives the best of both worlds

He is right.
The TT is a road car thats capable on a track.
The GT2 & GT3 are track cars that are capable on the road.
Therefore each will be limited in one area.

Bugger..i thought we could have had a lot more 'my car is quicker than yours'arguments before someone said something sensible. Its going to be a boring friday now.The TT is a road car thats capable on a track.

I drive a Turbo S most week days and have a GT3 RS for the track. Clearly the two cas are massively different. The best place for the RS is on the track, maybe because mine is set up for the track, it's very nervous on the road and you have to be very carefull about the quality of roads. I have taken the turbo on the track and it's too refined, on the road it's great, all the power and grip you need, I don't understand anybody who calls it boring.
The issue may be the difference between somebody (ie. me) who uses the car every day, and somebody who wants a Sunday toy, in that case the turbo may not be radical enought and a GT3 may be more suitable or even a 993 Turbo (which is my Sunday car when I get the engine fixed !)

This not a "my car is faster" post but a "my is bloody fast on the road the way it is..."
As I said before on other threads you can always tune a Turbo to suit better your style and achieving a sort of compromise dialing out the factory induced understeer, making it stiffer using OEM sports suspension and engine mounts, sharper using a fast road wheel alignment, etc., you can even convert them(VERY easy job) to 2WD but it will never as nimble as a GT3 on the track! On the other hand VERY few other cars in the world will be as fast from A to B on the road as a tweaked 996 Turbo, mind you that with a set of Pilot Sport 2's and OEM shocks (but GT2 anti-roll bar) I can get 1g going in and out of the motorways.

kayc - stop living in the past and get your order in for a 997GT3. The same writer suggests it's better on road and track than any of the others - including 997Turbo!Way back when the 996 TT was still pretty new I remember reading in one of the car mags, possible Top Gear, about a test of a selection of the fastest cars. The test was on a test track designed to recreate a typical cross section of everyday driving, slow fast and medium corners, possibly a roundabout and some straight. There were some faster cars than the 996 in terms of performance figures, but the 996 won the test because point to point nothing could beat it over that 'typical' section of road. It made an interesting read and always made me remember the 996 as a suprememe tool for crossing country in.
