I compete in 4x4 races. These are on timed laps rather than head to head and we have been having some problems with our current system.

General concensus in the club is that transponder timing would be the way forwards. Ideally the club would rather pay someone to come and do the timing and provide the equipment. Does anyone know of a Company that does this?

This sounds like you're doing the same thing we do at sprints i.e. start and end points and measuring the elapsed time for each vehicle, with several vehicles on the course. We use timing beams with timing marshals to tell the system which car has crossed the beam each time. It seems to work pretty reliably, as long as nobody drives over the timing gear.

Exactly the same and we are currently using a beam finish system. However the number of errors are too high, some human and some caused by dust triggering the beam.

I assume as transponders work in of road bike racing that they would work in our sport.

MST Timing do all the timing for club racing including me. Transponder through them cost around £200 which is very steep. But you are able to hire them on the day from MST if the are doing the timing which is aroud £25 for the day. Not to sure on how much they charge to do timing for a club though?

www.msttiming.com is your best bet for some contact details.
