It's a funny ad...

...funny because the autobahn that the 'Stang is driving on clearly has a slight bend in the road, which obviously negates the possibility that the car could go that fast

That wasn't meant to be serious

I had another idea for a GT500 ad but Ford didn't like it:

"Ford Mustang GT500 - Worth the weight?"

Ford dealers in the US are advertising these cars for $20k over sticker minimum ansd some morons are even paying it. Funnily enough, even the Mustang GT is in short supply and dealers are cashing in on premiums. On the plus side, they're already tuning these cars to produce well over 500 hp at the rear wheels.

*sigh* I knew it was gonna happen the second they showed the concept in Detroit a few years back - We would be seeing retro Mustangs left and right... its really unfortunate because I still do like the car, but over here theyre as common as the next car...

at least the GT500 comes in limited numbers so exclucivity is garunteed to some extent...

To some extent yes but with 9000 units a year and greedy grabbing dealers profiteering, the bubble will soon burst and there will be plenty to go round. The trick is waiting for the bubble to burst and for the GT500 to be old news (see Camaro;Challenger). The short supply for the stock cars as far as I can make out actually relates more to the manual GT coupe which everyone wants. There are far more autos, convertibles and V6's to choose from but as with anything in the US, short supply means another opportunity for Ford dealers to screw over their customers and alienate them. It sems Ford don't really know what their customers want and are producing the wrong models.

A little bit too much supercharger whine for my liking. I'm sure a Borla exhaust would soon sort that out though.

Even imported GTs offer excellent value for money. See Kent Car Imports site here: www.kc-imports.com/ You can spec your own car.....mine came out at just under £26k. Very tempted to hit the send button

Go on, go on, go on. However, I recommend saving £6k, buying from the glut of slightly used cars round and fitting upgraded suspension, a supercharger and a loud exhaust. I kid you not, it makes a sublime motoring proposition and as we found on a recent PH run, the Mustang could take anything any other car could throw at it from Elise to Maserati, through lanes and switchbacks or on motorway, the car was never wrong-footed even when others were losing their traction. The Vortech supercharger doesn't whine anything like that, in fact, it's barely noticeable and it gives a better power to weight ratio than the heavy GT500. The only advantage of a GT500 is the 6 speed box as the bigger brakes are offset by greater weight.

However, if buying a new 2006/2007 one, it might be worth having the dealer warranty as they're having issues on the newer ones with whining diffs and Ford operate a system of waiting till it goes wrong before deigning to do anything. Saleen incidentally, have been brilliant at honouring their warranty in the UK which is more than Ford will.

Oh, I quite agree there's more to be saved by buying "pre-owned" and doing your own mods. But, I've never owned a brand new car, made to my spec. I'd only ever do this if I were going to keep the car for a long time.......and I tend to. I've had my Zed nearly 6 years now.

It'll be next year before I'm looking. I really like the look of the '09 model too, albeit Road & Track's offering. I hope it's close to the real thing. A subtle, but effected facelift giving the front end a slightly sleeker look. Me likes

Oh, and whining diffs? Thanks for the heads-up. Something else the old Stang has in common with Ford's other finest, the Capri

...easy to see why Ford is a sinking ship eh... if you take out the Mustang and the F150 out of their US lineup, Im quite sure sales come out better overseas than in the US - and maybe its a combination of all of the above but, theyve definately lost a great deal of credibility here even... and looks like Dodge (specifically) is getting stronger and stronger and indeed, with the arrival of the Challenger and the Camaro (and the Jap trucks to take on the F150 along with the other domestics)... maybe the end of Ford quite soon - and theyd have themselves to blame for it.

and TT - I actually LOVE that huuge whine from the supercharger ...just gives me goosebumps... Id rather have the V8 rumble as a background sound and the supercharger whine as the primary sound (sorta like the Jag V8s) as opposed to the opposite...
