Educate me.

I have seen this word batted about and am aware it refers to actual recorded speed. Can someone point me in the direction of a website or give me more information?

On PH, the term is normally referring to a group of PHers meeting up at an aiurfield and hooning down the runway through a speedtrap.

Here's the VMAX forum:

As you've already deduced, it's a term used by automotive engineers to denote maximum velocity. The 'max' bit would usually be used as a subscript after a capital 'V' in equations or technical reports.

As others have said, it has been adopted by Jap motorcycles and organisers of maximum speed airfield events.
