OK - so if you have to ask then you probably shouldn't be buying.

However, after 20 years with TVRs I seem to be having yet another mid-life crisis and find myself irresistably drawn towards the Maserati Spyder.

I don't know anything about these cars but I'm slightly concerned about;

1. Depreciation.

New price is around £65,000.
At 3 years you can get them for around £30,000.

I'm used to TVRs which hold their price comparatively very well after the first 2 years so the depreciation hit may put me off.

2. Servicing costs.

When I had a chat to a local dealer last weekend he reckoned servicing would be about £500 every 12,000 miles or every year.

Now that's less than I'm currently paying for my Tamora. So is he correct?

3. Reliability.

Yes OK so you're thinking 'eh? You drive a TVR - you must know the names of all the AA flatbed recovery blokes in your area by now, ho ho!'.

Actually, my TVRs have all been as reliable as any other car I've ever owned or driven so I would be expecting a Maser to behave itself.

What's the reality of Maserati reliability.

4. Re-sale.

If I get a 2003 Spyder for about £30,000 what will it be worth after 3 years and another 15,000 or so miles on the clock and will I struggle to sell it?

I'd like to find something to put me off buying one of these cars otherwise I'm very likely to own one before very long.

Fire away!

I can speak for reliability as we pick them up when they break down - which unfortunately is rather often. They're not quite as bad as the Quattroportes but not far off - the main problem being electrical issues.

If I'm not mistaken I thought that they came with 3 years servicing included?

There's also a new model out in 07/08 which would hit the resale values of the current model rather hard IMO.

Hi,
The coupe is by far a superior car to the syder.
Depreciation shouldnt be too harsh on anything over 2 years old. And reliability is just one of those things you have to live with if you want one these kind of cars, however in my experience once a car is over 2 yrs old it would tend to have most of the problems ironed out.

All you can do is stack the odds in your favour by buying carefully and checking history is proper.

depreciation is your friend if buying used , so just buy it and hope to have escaped the worst. It will lose value but how much is anyones guess. Main problem is finding a private buyers for cars 20-30k as car loans often do not stretch that high.

Service - check the small print. maserati main dealers offer "discount voucher" service during the warranty period (3 years). Customer pays approx £600 per visit, very good value indeed. after that it is back to £12-1400 per visit or 600 for an annual check. Many specialists who seem well regarded in maserati forums will do service for a lot less.

Forgot to say - JUST GET IT

Well maybe if your a top notch driver and regularly drive to the cars limit. This infamous scuttle shake really isn't a big deal - in fact if it is there or what there is of it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

For us mere mortals, whos skill runs out way before the cars does, I'll take the rag top and fun roof down motoring every time.

not tried masser spyder, but bought 911 cabrio for my wife and expected to hate it. Would never have a tin top 911 now, OK maybe a GT3. No roof = more noise , more sky, more experience.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not being put off at all plus, with TVR 'relocating', it may be a realistic possibility to sell the Tiv early next year.

I reckon I can just about control myself until then unless someone puts a blinder on Autotrader.
