Not that I have a Porsche to replace!

I was wondering if anyone here was considering an R8 as a replacement when they next shuffle their garage. After all a high revving mid mounted V8 would be an attractive proposition - especially whem mated to a car with considerable build quality and decent interiors.

As an every day car that would be pretty good.

The looks are divisive I suspect but really beginning to grow on me, and would be something different (although I expect that London may soon become awash with them)

From the pics of the R8 in this months EVO I thought it looked stunning. Definately targeting the '911' and AMV8 as a sporty everyday car rather than a weekend drive like a Ferrari.

It also looks like the second generation of it will use the 5 litre V10 as used in the Gallardo.

R8 looks really good however as usual i think it will be too expensive compared to a 997...all the Audi's a bit toppy in price and seem to lose value very quickly e.g RS4's were trading in theory at 55k+ and hard to get hold of,now offered at main dealers at sub 50k and in plentiful supply..imo the RS4 was only a 45k car in the first place.

It's got to hurt sales hasn't it?

Between the AMV8 and the R8 I reckon Porsche might not have such a great couple of years..

Boxster wasn't affected by the Audi TT which was slated as a direct competitor.

The TT was a good 10-15k cheaper though at launch wasn't it? Different market altogether IMO.

It is possible that the R8 might just be a 'Good to drive' Audi and as such I might consider one as a 911 replacement. I reserve judgement until I have had the pleasure of driving one. On paper all the ingredients seem right and I like the look of the car but until now I found it hard to get excited over the way that Audi's drive.

I don't want to upset Audi drivers - I think the cars are fine pieces of engineering its just they seem to understeer and generally don't perform that well on a track.

Maybe the R8 will be different driving

We already had the Z4M which was according to BMW meant to not only challenge the Cayman S but even more so attack the 911, not least on track performance. As we all know, this was some optimistic thinking on their side.

The R8 surely has got the right ingredients but if the mix will really satisfy the Porsche clientele is a different story alltogether. Let's see how it actually drives.

It does look good, though shame they are not going to do a rwd version.

Still have little faith that Audi will engineer it with anything other than being totally idiot proof..

If the number of sales directly lost to the 911 range is fairly marginal, i'm not sure they will be that bothered (remember P own 25% of VAG)

Not for me.

Like a lot of other 911 owners I've got a family. Unless I can fit my two kids in, it'd never get used.

Plus, a Porsche was an aspirational choice for me, the realisation of a dream.

Same for me. Never had an Audi R8 on my bedroom wall as a kid and you can't put a value on the realisation of a dream..

The R8 looks stunning (quite surprised I like it...) and will probably do everything right - somehow still won't have the magic of the 911.

Does look like a mini Lambo (for obvious reasons..) and I'm sure they'll tempt quite a few potential Gallardo owners to the R8.

Saw a base price of £75k somewhere - any ideas what a fully loaded version would come in at? Never specced an Audi so no clue about option prices.

I used to have an Audi ur-quatro pic and modles in my bedroom, I still think it looks the dogs danglies.

The R8 looks ok but doesnt stir the emotions.

I think this is the strongest argument in the R8s favour over the 911. The R8 does look special... the detailing looks fabulous.
Whereas the 911 - heck all the current Porsches - look too similar to each other cannibalising their own identity.

Really needs to be £65-8k with all the kit IMHO. The standard spec will be much better than Porsche's poor std spec on the base 997. A car with a badge of less prestige needs to undercut Porsche not cost more.

I reckon I could write the review now - "great looks, strong performance, fantastic interior, great engine, roadholding of quattro better in wet but steering feel and handling not quite as crisp, sharp or as full of feedback as the benchmark 911", make it 10k cheaper than equivalent-spec 997 and it will hurt their sales due to looks and "its not a 911" factor which I think is growing.

The back of that R8 looks wrong (looks like a pre production mule..). Check out the press pics and it looks quite different from the back (a lot better...).

Every new sports car that comes out is et to topple the 911 and then fails...

I'm no Porker nut but the fact is Porsche have been doing it for years and got it down to fine art. Sure, Audi have th help of Lambo (more like they holding Lmabo to ransom and forcing them!) but they will have to 'dumb' the driving experience down for the average Audi driver. Nothing against Audi driver but the are used to understeering into the hedge. The whole oversteer thing might be too much to handle lol.

Look again at those pics of the Audi. So far we've only really seen the flattering press shots (and the 'butt' ugly photo in this post). The car is actually a crap looker. It doesn't seem to flow and looks as if they have forced certain styling cues on it. The Roof line is too high, the rear end is horrible and has TT lights and the front is too droopy. And what is with e wannabe Veyron side profile and different colours?

I'm sure it will be good but as their first attempt it is not going to be worthy replacement for a car as developed as the 911.

Also, can you imaging the owenership experience, turning up at Audi track day meets and having to share track space with estates, superchipped diesels and the like??

Servicing: Imagine dropping you supercar off at the local Audi dealership and sitting next to Mr 1,9 TDI driver and listening to him talk about how he reckons his derv has more torque than your R8 and that in the 'real world' his A6 will be faster than your R8...and he will still get 40mpg...lol

Don't get me wrong, its going to be a good car, but a pointless one never the less.
