to be honest its the best chance he will ever get. the renault is a very fast car and he is not that bad a driver. i think he should have been given the boot years ago but he has been a good number two in the Barrichello and Patrese role of trundling round and getting points.

if mclaren and Alonso dont get on and Ferrari and Kimi likewise suffer at the start of the season, there is the chance that he could surprise a few and be up near the top come the summer. then i think it will be downhill as the others come to the fore. This does not take into account the Hondas, BMWs et al, so in hindsight, he doesnt stand a chance.

has Fisichella become the next Coulthard?

I don't really see how it's THAT humourous a statement to be honest, F1 is fickle, very fickle.

Bless him, Fisi is taking over the mantle from David '1998/99/2000/01/02/03 will be my year' Coulthard.

Fisichella's okay, but I've always seen him and Trulli in the same light - good qualifiers, occasionally very good racers, but often prone to losing interest/concentration or just being terribly mediocre in races.

Heikki could give him quite a surprise.

I wouldn't be laughing if he had said it.

Unless Alonso has the Mac reliability issues.

And kimi keeps breaking his car.

And BAR go backwards.

And so do Red Bull.

Then he might stand a chance of coming 2nd.

What should he have said to motivate his team then, "I've got no chance".

He's shown he can win Grands Prix. I get the impression he's the kind of driver that needs to feel loved, and has the support of the team.

I do feel that with the right management he might do better than expected.

Been musing on this a little since the original post went up and still keep getting the same conclusion and even after a quick re-fresh on his history I still reckon the correct answer is not so long as there is hole in my arse.

well, he's got the right car - the skill and ability.

In all seriousness, if he gets his head straight and hits some consistancy, he could be at the thick end of it..

I think being up against Alonso must have crushed his spirit a bit. But now he has the chance to be team leader... or be beaten by a rookie.

I hope he proves me wrong but I just dont see it happening - he has said the same thing every winter since rejoining Renault but he has never once shown any sign of challenging for a championship. He will win one race from pole, then be nowhere at the very next GP!
