Rumour here says that he has been testing the new F1 and has been at the McLarens physical test. They havent named the second driver yet? He might come back.
Doubt he'll have been in a car - they'll only do their first test since Brazil this week. Not sure there would be any point running him anyway, even if he was competitive again. There's no future benefit in bringing him back.
except the fact that he is a sh*t hot driver who gives it balls out everytime perhaps his presence would serve to spur on alsonso that extra tenth in the still slow mclaren (this year)ie decent competition would get his undivided attention no doubt.
however i too fail to see the sence in it ( dont forget it is a slow news period and stories like these are not new in the "off season" sells a few copies of autosport!!)
hakk was always the ron dennis favorite before he left and I can only see friction if they team up??

Interesting post-script to all this speculation about Hakkinen - for the 2005 season, Frank Williams tried to to secure both him and Anthony Davidson to drive for him. Would have made quite a combination methinks. It also makes me wonder how early the friction between Williams and BMW started, since this coud be construed as Frank trying to secure 2 st-hot drivers to keep BMW on his ticket...

Sources say that he has tested the new car already.
Which reminds me the speculations here, when Räikkönen joined Ferrari and that wasnt a rumour at all.

some roumers will be correct and others... just rumours
kimi and ferrari was always a possibility

just doesn't seem a likely or especialy logical step.
personaly I always loved hak but his day in f1 I think is done ( motivation) love him as I do , he hardly set the DTM world on fire did he

I think he would probably be pretty good back in F1 apparently DTM cars are very much set up and you take what you get given and this didnt really suit Hakkinen. It would give them a breathing space to let Hamilton do some testing and learn the circuits before making his big debut on a more equal footing with Alonso. It would also give Maclaren an added senior voice in th GPDA with Alonso as chairman and world champions getting a larger say.
I thought with Alex Wurz leaving they might just want someone with extra experience to help with engineering and development, or maybe it was just a publicity stunt (Ron is good at them) letting his old mate try out a car perhaps.
Although I think now it's probably just a PR exercise to do with this below.
Hakkinen named as Johnnie Walker ambassador.
Diageo plc has appointed double Formula One champion Mika Hakkinen as the responsible drinking ambassador for its Johnnie Walker Formula One sponsorship programme. Hakkinen's new role will involve raising awareness on issues of responsible drinking, particularly in relation to driving – including the importance of having a designated driver and promoting anti-drink drive messages to Formula One race audiences.
"The association with Johnnie Walker and Team McLaren Mercedes has seen us successfully deliver the responsible drinking and safe driving message to millions of people around the world," Ben Anderson, global brand director for Johnnie Walker, explained. Our belief is that delivering these messages through Formula One and its role models will raise responsible drinking awareness.
"Our ongoing commitment to the advancement of our responsible drinking programme is demonstrated through the creation of this ambassadorial role. Mika's close association with McLaren and Mercedes, and his status as a role model for professionalism, precision and control to race fans around the world make him perfect for this job."
Hakkinen's appointment builds on the current association between Johnnie Walker and the McLaren Mercedes team – a partnership that has seen over £2 million invested each year since 1995 to promote responsible drinking messages in Grand Prix markets. With the issue of responsible drinking and safe driving being one applicable to Formula One markets throughout the globe, the Mercedes DTM driver said he was proud to have been chosen to fill the role.
"I am extremely proud to represent such a prestigious company as Diageo in this very important role," the Finn said. "My years on the racetrack have shown the vital role responsibility and control play in motor sport, these principles are just as important for drivers on the road around the world.
"This is a role that I truly believe in."
Anyone see the irony in giving the role of responsible drinking ambassador to Hakkinen after Raikonnen has left the team?

Today Mika had a private test with Mclaren at silverstone, and was supposedly 10ths off Raikkonens times round there. I'm not telling lies either because my dad was there and spoke to him. My dad said he reckoned Mika was 75% likely to drive for them from what he heard speaking to Mclaren, but a firm announcement would be made in the winter.
I would say more, but that is all I have heard from speaking to my dad on the phone, sorry.
Bare in mind the conditions today and how cold it was too... who knows, hopefully.
