All,

Sorry to bother you, but I was wondering whether you all would have any input into my imminent buying decision. Although I've owned a 1977 911 and also two Trevors (Griff and a Chimera), my understanding of living with an older 911 is less than my understanding of living with a Trevor (and I know all about the reliability issues!), hence my posting here rather than on the TVR forum (dull intro over).

My choice (as second car but must be useable daily for short runs) is between an older 911 (would love RHD pre-73 but they look expensive) and a Griff (1997 or thereabouts for the money, I reckon). I have to fit a <1 yo kiddy in the back if I can (not going to happen on the TVR, obviouisly) and this is largely the 911's selling point, so I was wondering whether anyone on the forum has any experience with fitting young children (safely) in the back of their 911s and if so which version / age car they chose and why...

Sorry to sound so needy on the my first posting, but any help would be gratefully received.

Ta

for 15K you should get a very reasonable RHD 964 (privately probably) or a tiptop utterly sorted LHD. Given that you are travelling with a small person you will probably appreciate the more modern touches of the 964 over its elder brethren (like ABS and a working heater )

Dunno how you'll feel coming from a hairy chested TVR. My first drive of a 964 scared the bejeezus out of me (whilst planting a seed of "i want one" which is impossible to eradicate).

If it was my money i would opt for 911,when looking for a second car looked at a Cerbera was not impressed with build quality. There was also the issue of reliability to overcome. But on saying all that they still sound great and go like stink.

re the TVR, you can't get your baby into one either (well, not with it's main carer too).

and even if you could, would you? honestly?

No probs with 911 and small nippers.
I had a 911 SC, then the youngster came around fitted in the back nicely albeit only had lap belts.
Then purchased a 911 Turbo2 no probs with that either.
No running a 911 Cab, bit drafty with hood down though hehe for the nipper.
Main constraint i have now is my missus is 8 weeks pregnant, not sure about practicality now, any ideas anybody?
Saving grace is the 911 has always been a 3rd car to me.

'88 911 3.2 here with 3 year old safely installed (and has been since he was 18 months old) who loves it "Daddy car brumm-brumm".....

I looked at 964 versus 3.2 when buying and opted for 3.2 as it's easier (and cheaper) to maintain.

fancied a griff a lot, british bull dog , V8 noise, five star evo classic, cheap really etc etc............drove one, look at the way a blackpool stevie wonder
had build it! walked away

bought a 3.2 89 G50 cab, best decision ever made: shame but true that IMHO we do many things well in this country but building sports cars ( noble and lotus excepted i suppose before i get flamed ) is not one of them: recently visited the factory in stuttgart, see the real real love of engineering then you realise why TVR is bust.

964 964 964

Very reliable
Lovely drive
Classic porsche shape
Pokey enough (not a Tevor but not bad)
Very good in the back for kids (2) up to 10 or 11 without problem (unless you breed very big ones)
Cheaper than the models either side of it
Much more of a modern drive that the 3.2 carerra, better looking than the 993 (cant get past its girly front end)

My 1988 3.2 Carrera is going on the classifieds this weekend for just over £14k. Fantastic car and i truly believe the 911 is the worlds best all round sports car.

It is very handy having the rear seats as we have a 3 yr old and we use a Britax kid Plus seat which is great.

It is a real head v heart decision. Head says keep the superb car I have, nearly every one that I know on here says keep it, its a belter ... but heart misses a soft top too much.

They are good cars, and very easy to drive, even the wife doesn't mind driving it

AB,

I have an 86 carrera and put my 2.5 and my 1 year old in the back very safely. 3 point belts fitted by yours truly (parts cost about £80, took about 2 hours max). Silghtly harder to fit 3 points in older pre 82 cars, but still very do'able (need to drill through the rear parcel shelf/bulkhead)

Got the seat for the 2.5 year old from SBS Quickbelts, maxi cosi rodi £80, the other seat is a little harder. Best seat to get is a Klippan Futura or M&P's Securio. You can't buy them new anymore so have to keep your eye on ebay. I got my Futura for £14.99 after a few weeks of looking and had to drive 3 hours round trip to get it - great excuse for a drive if you ask me ;-)

Got for the 911, build quality, reliability etc beats the trevor hands down. Have said that my heating packed in this morning....

yeah, i was going to suggest that as an option - best way to spend £15k on a 911 IMHO..

Although if you did favour the 3.2 Al's motor looks mighty tempting, have thought about it a bit myself !
