anyone know what a house renters rights are in switzerland, we just got a letter from our letting agent saying the owner of the house we rent is going to sell it, would like to know where we stand, eg can they just give us a couple of months notice and tell us to bugger off? How does things like the deposit stand, as the owner of the house has ours in a joint account with us at the moment, etc etc

the letting agency staff can no longer speak english all of a sudden, so getting info out of them is proving a bit difficult.

First of all, why do you think a changing landlord leads to trouble? Normally, the old deposit will be shared with the new owner then. I can't speak for Switzerland, but in Germany, it becomes more difficult to cancel the contract for the landlord, the longer the tenant lives in the object.

The Swiss authority for living space (?) has published an info brochure to inform tenants about renting in Switzerland. I can't link the document directly, but the page where you can download it from:

www.bwo.admin.ch/dokumentation/00106/00112/00121/index.html?lang=de

Go for Englisch (farbig) in the right column. (sw) means, it's the b/w version.

ta, just spoke to the letting agents and they have said that the new owners may want us to move out, so I don't know how that will work as our contract says the old owners have to give us 3 months notice.

Then the new owners have to give you 3 months notice as well. Wait for him to ask you to move out and then use the time to find something better, or offer him to move out earlier if he supports your move with some CHF
