They are also recommended in FIA rules, and will become mandatory in 2008 or 2009 depending on class in the FIA. I find the statement in the rules
a bit confusing for determining which classes are affected when so have requested clarification. However, the rules do still strongly stress their recommendation to use one prior to these dates.
For a long time I found it odd how in drag racing the neck collar was used, but you didn't see any neck support in other motorsport divisions. Now it seems that drag racing is behind the game in this area, but rapidly catching up.

Dale Earnhardt the NASCAR driver would probably still be alive if he had worn one. lt's said he wouldn't wear one as the HANS device would hang him.
l think they should become compulsory for any FIA class where the vehicle exceeds 200 mph.

Yeah, I have heard that said about Dale Earnhardt before. There have been several nasty occurrences over the years where people have rejected advice over safety equipment.
As for what classes they will be compulsory in it will certainly be FIA classes, and may in fact be all classes.
The HANS device is definately a good idea, I wouldn't mind seeing it every class, not just the ones who exceed 200 MPH. Let's be honest, whether it's in Super Street, Wild Bunch, Pro ET or SE, the majority of todays race cars can go fast enough to damage your neck/head in a smash. Earnhardt's crash proves it doesn't even need to be particularly spectacular to prove fatal. Yeah, there are helmet and chassis specs in place, but every little helps right?
