Hey all.

Was wondering if we have any members who hillclimb. cant afford to do any circuit racing but would be able to enter some hillclimbs was wondering if there is anyone with a vast knowledge of it all, what would i need to do to my car etc, any classes for standard cars?

Your best bet is to get along to a meeting and talk to people. They will be very friendly and helpful.

You can compete in a standard road car. you will have to fit a timing strut to the front and possibly put an off sticker by your ign switch.

You will need a crash hat and flame retardent overalls. I think its possible to get kitted out for under £200.

Entry fees are around £80 per event. For this you will get a minimu of 2 timed practice runs and 2 timed runs to count for the results. Sometimes you can get a total of 6 runs. Each run typically lasts around 60 secs, though some courses are longer and shorter. So you dont actually get much running for your cash but it is great fun and very socialable.

You will also need a competition license from the RACMSA and be a member of a motor club.

It is also a good idea to do a championship. This gives you a better chance of entry and something to go for.

Do a search for hillclimbing on Google and you will come up with various associations clubs etc.

Have fun.

We have quite a few PH members in the TVRCC Speed Championship ( www.tvrspeedchampionship.co.uk ), and we provide a getting started guide that covers the basics. You can also find a lot of information at www.tvrspeedchampionship.co.uk , the unofficial home of UK motorsport.

You mean Gurston Down. I do, Ben240z does, SteveV8s does and so do a few other PHers. First event of the year is on 21st April - come along, say hi and have a look around, you'll soon get a good idea if it's something you want to have a go at.

As Nick says, close to Salisbury you have Gurston and also Longleat (one event usually in September) and not that far away is Wiscombe. Probably the best way to get started is to do a school day at one of the hills. That will give you an idea of what is involved without first committing to prepping a car and getting all the gear.

Take a look at the Gurston website, you will find a couple of video clips, stuff about the school days and loads of other info. If you want to take a very much “off the pace” run up gurston from the test day last weekend then look at www.pistonheads.tv/clip1216

Wiscombe and Longleat are run by the Woolbridge club who also have a useful website.

Should warn you however that it is highly addictive.

I did a few events a couple of years ago in the M Turbo. Sold it and havent got back into it...
I did Wiscombe twice, Longleat and a sprint at Llandow - Spelling? Good fun, although hard work in a 70's turbo.
I quite fancy having another go at it in the Chim actuallyscratchchin

Nice vid, Steve - looks so much smoother without the frantic arm flailing that goes on inside my car...also looks pretty swift.

Ni Nick. You got an entry for April ? I’ve not heard yet.

The flailing arms and panic are there OK, just that it is happening off camera. Nice of you to say that it looks a swift run but if you look again you will see that I lift far too early for Hollow, break far too early for Karousel and completely chicken out over the finish. I found about a second and a half over this later in the day.

Steve Buts has an ever so slightly quicker run posted that can be found by searching Gurston from Google Video. There are two runs posted, one with him driving and one with the chap he borrowed the engine from. Interesting to compare the lines.

You lift for Hollow? Your car has too much power then...

Not heard about entries for 21st/22nd yet either - what sort of time did you get down to?

Would also look at sprinting, running on proper circuits (or airfields) and you'll probably get marginally more track time plus there should be less to hit if it goes wrong!

Read these two threads on ScoobyNet, they'll give you a good insight as to what's involved and the type of folk you'll meet up with. Graham (who posts as 911 on SN) is a typical hill climber who started off with a basic car and has modded it further and further as the competition has got more intense !

I had no idea I was getting that much wheel spin there so a very useful pic, obviously still a bit more power than grip. The Hoosiers don’t squeal like the Yokies so other than lots of revs and no forward motion it is difficult to tell. Would be interesting to know if I was leaving lots of smoke out of ashes as well. The quicker runs later in the day were after I had played with the pressures so this pic (I hope anyway) was early on when the grip was a bit limited. Faffing with pressures improved the 64ft time by more than 0.3 which is worth having. It also reminds me that I really should change the Diff oil to give the LSD the best chance of working.

did you run higher or lower tyre pressures to improve your 64ft time?

Lower. All the advice from Hoosier said run them very hard, but they were quite disappointing. Dropped them back to the same as I usually have in the Yokies and found a lot more grip.

The Scimitar - probably about the same weight as the Griffith but a lot less power - launches in 2.35 - 2.45 pretty consistently with around 20psi in the rear tyres, but those are medium compound A048s, might run a couple of pounds higher with a softer tyre.

The main problem with Gurston for me has been the lack of standard classes. However, this year both the ASWMC and ACSMC are running at the hill so it's not a problem for standard spec cars. As others have mentioned, Longleat and Wiscombe aren't a million miles from Salisbury either.

For series that allow standard cars, check out the BARC, ACSMC, ASMWC and HSA championships. All have a good spread of events.

I compete in a marque championship at various venues - this year Gurston, Prescott, Harewood, Wiscombe, Shelsley and Loton are on the calender.
People have always been exceedingly friendly and helpful at the events
