DAMN!! the things are so small and hanging from the Autobahn bridges!! a diameter of around 5cm only and hanging at about 3m off the roadway.... VERY difficult to see (as in the shadow and under the bridge) especially when you're concentrating on traffic!
Got stung two weeks ago near Augsburg on the A8. Video and stills...got the offer, going to have to pay.... aaaarrrgghhh, silly me!!

Hi JMGS4 ,
are you sure that the things described by you are cameras for/against tailgating?
There are thingys like this on almost every bridge,
but I think they watch traffic movement for the congestion warnings on radio?
And the large camera-only bridges seen in the open are (as for now.... )
for truck toll collecting, they film and record all vehicles & number plates,
but only the truck data are saved and checked (so the officials say).
There are other cameras that are set up only temporarily on bridges,
to get tailgaters and other offenders.

Benni, definitely not the congestion measuring things as these are large with a solar panel on top and around 2 feet square; these cameras are around 5cm in diameter, about 15 cms long and hang on a small diameter pole from the bridge in the corner by the bridge support over/behind the armco at about 3m height. Saw the van too late as it was hidden behind bushes off the bridge on the crossing road... Seems to be a type of "bullet" cam????
I got nabbed when closing fast and dropped back after I'd closed them.... as there was no getting through.. I checked on the same day going back along the same stretch and saw them very clearly coming the other way on another bridge. Also saw the polizei putting one up, seem to be (re)moveable!!

and they're definitely not the huge MAUT gantries!!!

OK, then this was one of the "mobile" thingys,
hope it does not get tooooo expensive.
I seldom have this problem becauseof my 80mph top speed....,
watch out for the rattiest heap in PHdom,
a faded yellow-ish 77 Chevy Chevelle Estate (C-Kadett Caravan),
it is me on the way to dragracing(commentary) !
Cheers,
Benni

Thats what happened to me on. Was doing probably twice the speed of the idiot numptyy sat in the fast lane, not overtaking anything, on a very lightly trafficked bit of road.

I didnt notice any cameras, and then got a surprise in the mail frown
