Great news regarding the Tuscan success in the International GT 90 race at Silverstone! A few of us were competing at Croft this weekend and ran into some difficulty that will be pertinent to all Tuscan Challenge cars during scrutineering. We are told that the welded 'helmet hoop'atop the rear cage is no longer acceptable to the MSA. They are to be removed with obvious complications to any driver over 5'5", or a new cagefitted with the extended hoop being integral to the structure of the cage rather than being a welded 'add-on'! This means that every Tuscan that I have ever seen is basically ineligeble to race in their current form.
We need to approach the MSA to challenge this assertion, the hoop extention is very strong, indeed at the Birmingham Superprix meeting our car was craned off the circuit twice using this hoop as a lifting point!! Perhaps we should have had the driver craned off instead before he got in the car!!
Please be aware of this ruling and perhaps we can have peoples thoughts and formulate a plan of action before it gets unecessarily expensive!!
Best regards to all. Tony

Were the scruit's able to point to the particular section on the blue book that states this?

This would give me a huge problem as both my cars ( tuscan and Taz) have the same hoop. and im marginal with the hoop in place in the tuscan !!!!

If it is correct rather than an interpretation ( which isnt unknown) then i wonder if getting th cage homologated would get round it, although since they changed the rules on how this is done it now costs about 1500 quid, but between 10 or so of us thats cheaper than new cages...

although I expect we could find plenty of crash testing on tuscan cages !!!!

Maybe i'll just have to put a hard top on and hide the hoop hehe

Cheers

G

Tony - I suggest that we e mail John Crook and seek his view on the matter. The Blue Book rules have not changed this year so this is not really a matter of 'no longer acceptable'.

The Tuscans were scrutineered and passed by both MSA and FIA officials on Friday morning - I suspect you ran intop a well meaning but possibly over zealous official at Croft?

Kind regards

Andy

I think I know the scrute in question 'cos I saw him in the assembly area for a different race at Croft on Sunday.... he works at the same place I do. If it was him, I'll see what his views were in more detail.

I would have thought it's just his personal opinion but not specified in the blue book otherwise he wouldn't let you pass ? He had similar opinions about the oil catch tank I had in my Westfield a couple of years ago - it was 2 litres in capacity with a clear view of the level as required by the blue book but he didn't like it because it was just a coke bottle

The issue is being persued at the highest level of the MSA, so we will just have to sit tight and see what happens.

I'll keep everyone updated

UPDATE from John Reid

>>>

I have been in touch with the MSA also Jon Crook our eligibility scrutineer who looked into the situation at Croft last weekend, it seems that the MSA had sent out a directive to the safety scutineers about roll cages stating that any alterations or add-on invalidate the roll cage certificate which the TVR Tuscan certificate states ( Certificate No 1734 dated 18-5-99), The car's with original cages should not have a problem it's the car's which the cages have been altered and don't comply with the certificate !!
I will bring the original certificate to Pembury in case we run into any problems I don't think we will as the head srutineer is experienced in TVR Tuscan car's..
I will hopefully get a letter or have some sort of acknowledgement from the MSA..

<<<<

So mixed news, Original Cages should be ok, modified ones may pose more of an issue John is also looking into that.

Good news to hear that the cages are actually certificated though!!!!

Not wanting to confuse the issue here, however...

Does this mean that all cages racing in the series, whether Tuscan or otherwise need a certificate?

As I understand it as long as your cage complies with the standards in the blue book then no. If it differs from these standards then it needs to be certificated.

i.e if you use std tube 45*2.5 or 50*2 then i think your ok, but anything else and it needs certificating which used to be about 150 quid, but i think is now more like 1.5k yikes

I'll see if we can get hold of this additional document that has been passed to the scruits..

Cheers
