Proposed changes to National Rally regs in Motorsport Now!
Discussion
Any of you licence holdes read through this yet?
The proposed changes to the regulations appear to effectively limit the modifications to keeping cars similar in principle to how they left the factory. Whilst I can understand the reasoning behind this (they view it as making the sport safer), it will rob the competitor of the freedom to use ingenuity in the construction of their machines, and rob the spectator of the spectacle of such cars.
Straight out the door will be Andy Burtons 306. There will be no place for RWD or 4x4 converted Mk3 onward escorts, fiestas, 206's etc. Limiting engine increasing to 25% will mean an end to some V8 transplanted cars too.
I can't help thinking that these steps will further morph the sport into a Scooby / Evo battle with some asthmatic FWD one makers trundling along behind. This would be sad indeed.
It also means that I am shelving the idea of turbo rotary power for my Mk2 Escort .... Sad

On the plus side, your wallet has just breathed a sigh of relief.
Not really. Big bhp from a traditional 2 litre 4-pot is v v v expensive. I'm currently thinking that something like a Honda S2000 engine and box could be a good start point.
Get rid of the Escort and get a Datsun P510 transplant an SR20DET and associated Nissan parts, could even fit a six speed. Nissan/Datsun stuff is suprisingly interchangable and cheap.
The 510 is generally a better basis as a rally car than the Escort anyway.
or if turbos aren't allowed unless from the factory, maybe it's time to start building a mean BMW 2002 Turbo replica
