here the fastest lap at the Nordschleife in 08:33 min. ever been driven by one of our driver training participants:

www.race-training.com/videos/nordschleife4.wmv

car: 470 hp Techart Porsche 996 Turbo, driven on May 6th, 2007. Anybody to beat this time? :-)) I'm joking!

Here the instructions are given in German as it was a German participant. English is also possible of course.

He started the training arround 10:00 minutes and improved his lap time by more than 60 seconds!

8:33 Bridge to Gantry time of course, which would be 9:00 or so full lap. Not too bad on a public day for a novice if thats his first day there, miles off the pace of the car though, give me a free lesson and i'll knock at least 33 seconds off that.

The real test to how well he learned through the training would have been to see how he went without the instructor sat in the car on that lap, it's easy when someones telling you what to do, not so easy when you have to remember whats coming up next yourself.

I predict carnage if you timed your pupils on their own though.

Well it was not his first visit to Ring but he had less than 25 laps before our training. We did 17 laps (6 on Saturday evening and 11 on Sunday). He booked me exclusively for that training and improved constantly the last laps were a little bit slower as we had too much traffic. For a novice this time is not bad.

Best regards
Oliver

We were doing sub 9's bridge to gantry in a 130bhp 106 last year. Was our first visit so we didn't know the track that well... 8.33 doesn't seem that quick to me given the car details!

Well 8:33 min. in the public for someone who has done less than 50 laps on the Nordschleife is pretty fast. Remember that there is always some traffic and one crash at the "Brünnchen" where he had to slow down. There you easyly loose 2 seconds or more. Without traffic he could have gone 8:30 min. or faster.

pdd144c: Which car did you go below 9 min.?

Hey John,

Remember our first ever lap. In your Westie. In the fog LOL. Hilarious! eek

Oliver,

8.33 isn't bad, but I had an 8:47, 4 up in a 184bhp 330d, so I guess that an 8 min BTG lap in the Porsche is more than possible. I'm sure John would love to see if the Porsche could manage it!

Well I hope he'll take part in the training again, so we can improve the time.

If anyone wants to beat that time feel free to book a training. I have more than 4.000 laps in coaching and racing and I can give you good tips to improve your lap time.

Hi Matt,

Hard to forget that first lap really isnt it. Good job i wasnt trying for a time, i was just trying to keep my undies clean.

One of my favourite memories of those first trips was playing the video footage back in the Lindenhof on the main TV from the lap where i made rich askew turn into a gibering wreck, it was around my 12-15th lap, i passed a Porshe GT3 round the outside through miss hit miss then completely forgot about werseifen and just about got away with that (on the grass just missing the armco, big lesson learnt there!), all the Bikers and regulars were then cheering as my little Westie went round the outside of a RUF Porsche with the biggest wing in the history of 911's on the entry to brunchen, end of the lap rich had 7:56 on the stopwatch the time was wrong as rich pressed the stopwatch too soon, the camera footage showed 8:20, not too bad for an early lap being held up in traffic. Looking back at the footage now i realise just how little i knew about the place, the rally experience was useful back then.

Sadly that Porsche isnt up for my use, it's one of olivers customers cars, 8:00 would be a piece of cake in that car these days. Not that i sugest timing laps as a useful thing to do, i just drive for fun when i get the chance these days. I wouldnt mind giving Paul's 700BHP Impreza another run round there one quiet day though, that should be seriously quick now it's properly sorted.

We must catch up soon Matt, we are doing the support race for the British GP so maybe see you there.

A little blue 106 XSi with a GTi engine, a little suspension and brake fettling, nothing major though. I'll have to come and say hello if we pop over this year, I may well be in a E36 M3 so I'm sure you may have a few tips! Just need to find a weekend when I'm not busy...

what is the best simulator to learn the circuit? GT3/4 or something else? also what would be a good car to learn it in? ie not something with big wings and slicks but something that requires a little bit more driver skill? hoping to take the 205 there in spring 08 (or whenever its built!) so knowing which corners are coming up when would be an advantage!.......

GT4 with the 106 GTi will give you a good enough idea what to expect. Assuming your 205 is standard.

Well video games are not the same as personal practice on the track. Video games will not give you any feedback on any driving mistakes you make. You can not feel crests, buppery passages, oversteering, understeering, etc. Video games are just helpfull to learn which turns will come next but they are no substitute for practicing with your own car on the track. An instructor like me who hase done a few 1000 laps can give you usefull information to avoid driving mistakes.

and i am sure you charge a good price too!!! i am well aware that a driving game is not the same as actually driving but as i said i want to learn my way around prior to departure rather than pay a fortune for an instructor where i will spend my first day learning what corner comes next.... if i could afford the time and money to practise on the circuit for real i would do so...

205 is mostly standard, just interior stripped, Avo shocks and 307 brake conversion, cage and a set of A539s....
