Hi,I have a 1996 Rover mini cooper. I recently asked you for help on a suspension issue and I just have to say a huge thankyou to Cooperman for all his help!

My newest problem is my fuse box. When I first got the car the spotlights kept fusing,I took it to a garage and they said that the interior map reading light that was plugged into the cig lighter was burning the fuse box.

I took it back to the garage I had purchased it from and instead of replacing the fuse box, they added an extra to the side of the fuse box. They also never replaced the cover and have since lost it.Not being mechanically minded or sensible, I was just relieved that it all worked.Since then my warranty with the garage has ended.

I have just taken my car for a service and they said they have real concerns about the fuse box.
It can no longer have a cover over it because of the position of the 'add on' and the water is getting on to the fuses. He showed me a blade with a white film on it!

My problem is,where can i find a replacement fusebox. The fuse box I have holds 24 blades (19 fuctional,5 spare) and I have searched every mini specialist on-line and e-bay but nobody seems to stock this sort of fuse box. Is there a way that an alternative fuse box can be fitted?
Many thanks for your help in advance,I have gained so much from this site by reading previous posts,so thankyou to all who share their knowledge with others.

Aren't Mini electrics absolutely horrible.
I was doing a load of re-wiring on an '86 Mayfiar yesterday on which the looming had come to pieces and all we had left was a huge bundle of wires, plugs, bullet connectors, etc. The loom itself had been 'butchered' and nasty block-type connectors used. After sorting all the main wiring, making sure that all the colour coding was correct, I started looking at all the other leads which don't seem to go anywhere. There are all these in-line fuses and I think we'll remove all of them and add another 8-fuse fuse-box, re-routing all the cabling through it to enable some semblance of sense to appear.
I hate bloody wiring!!!!!
On your problem, Sue, I wonder if the map light wired through the cigarette lighter had the connections the wrong way around in the plug. That can easily happen and then if the map light casing is live, it will fuse as positive is to earth. It's just a thought as I've known it to happen before. Best to wire it in through its own individual fuse and make it a permanent connection.
I hope all is well with you and your little car,

Peter

Peter,You really are one of the nicest people I,ve met on the net! You're always so willing to offer advice to all.
The guy who's trying to sort out my fuse box has now diconected the map light, which I don't mind as I don't need a map to get lost,I can do that all on my own!!

He's said that he needs a wiring diagram so he can work out what been wired to where!I can't find one of them yet,I also wondered,as the original fuse box has suffered a burn, would it possible to change it to another sort of fuse box as finding one of them is proving impossible too!!

If I win the lottery I'm going to set up a mini recycling project,so mini owners just swop parts they need and we never have to try and find parts again...................oh,to dream.
Nice to hear from you again.

Sue, the latest Haynes Manual has wiring diagrams to cover all models, inc the injection cars.
Of course, you can easily change the fuse box for a new one and have one which carries more fuses if you wish so that the circuits can be made to run less items from each fuse. In my rally cars I like to fuse each item separately so that if one fuse goes it just takes one thing down. For example, with the two huge 100w spotlights, each is fused separately, so I can only lose one if a fuse blows. The problem with later Minis is that in order to add things, but not add manufacturing cost, Rover used a lot of 'in-line' fuses which as nasty and cheap. They should have added another fuse box with at least 6 fuses in it. Damn cheapskates! If you need electrical parts there is an excellent web-based supplier - AES Electrical (Google for this!) - who are not expensive and carry an excellent range. Any sort of colour-coded wire is available as well as fuse boxes, swithes, connectors, etc. They are quick too. I ordered about £50 of stuff last Tuesday and it arrived on Thursday. Highly recommended.
Good luck with the re-wiring.
