My cousin just bought a new cooper s, delivered yesterday. Took it out for a quick spin, engine sounds very diesel like from outside, worse than my 306. Is this normal? Cracking car, but like all modern cars feels far too stiff, but great toquey engine.

Assuming it is a brand new mini then yes, they sound like diesels at start / from out side. It is down to the direct petrol injection system solenoids.

Upside is much better mpg, and with emission etc getting always tighter more and more petrol cars will sound the same in years to come.

But on the plus side the new S engine is a cracker, just had to give mine up was old works s quick.

On the crap engine note at idle try starting up a new M5 i have never been so disappointed, in a car but on the move its a symponhy
