A good source of help and information are these two owners clubs
www.mr2oc.co.uk/
www.imoc.co.uk/
Well worth joining imo - saved me a lot of hassle + ££££..!!

I assume you're after an n/a not a turbo. £9k for a Mk2 gives you plenty of scope - should be able to get a Rev5 for that sort of money.

A full service history + bills is a must.
Things to watch out for.
Cambelt change required at 60k miles. Not a cheap job especially if you're planning on getting Mr T (Toyota dealer) to do it!
Sticking rear brake calipers and/or handbrake cables.
Drop links/Anti rollbar bushes/Track rod ends.
If it's been properly looked after the engine is pretty bullet-proof. Good for 100k+ miles - no problem.

If you want any help, PM me and I'll see what I can do.

If you want some pace forget about the NA and go straight for a Turbo. For 9K, you'll get a very peachy, mid to late 90s Turbo tuned to 300bhp+. You'll not regret it, they're a hoot.

Check out the classifieds in the websites above and pick some brains in the forums.

A mate of mine picked up a very sound mk2 for £900 on ebay, the lacquer is starting to dettach on one door, but mechanically and structurally it's perfect. Surprised if you could spend £9k on one TBH.

Ok i think i got it a bit wrong lol, the MR2 i am after is the latest shape.
Sorry i forgot there had been quite a few MR2 for some reason i only thought there had been one model before!!! Stupid me.

Any help on the latest model would be helpfull, I am not familiar with the jargon of Rev5 etc so you will have to help me out.

Oh and could someone help me change the topic to just 'Toyota MR2'???

thanks

Ahh - the one you're talking about is known as the Mk III. Revs 1-5 were various updates/facelifts of the Mk II.

I don't know anything useful to add about them though smile

great little cars if lacking in storage space. Go on an owners club and search "pre cats" a bit of reading round that subject and you'll have covered every aspect that should be looked at when buying.

Fantastic little cars, if you dont worry about no luggage space.

Handling is amazing, better than MX-5 IMO, engine is very revvy, fantastic to drive.

If you're thinking of a Roadster, I'd say try find one for around the 7k mark and throw 3k at it to get it turbo'd for the extra punch the chassis needs cool

Make sure the one you buy has had it's pre-cat sorted because if it's not and the pre-cat fails, it will be new engine time alltogether wink

There are X-reg MR2s in the PH classifieds for £4500 - cheaper than an equivalent MX5 1.8 Sport, and faster and less gay.

Having owned an MX5 for two years and loved it, I fancy getting another cheap Jap two seater.

What's the downside with the MR2?? I was surprised to see them cheaper than MX5s. I know the boot space is poor, but what are the other drawbacks?? And what's the deal with the pre-cats??

try the mr2 roadster owners club IIRC: www.mr2roc.co.uk

if the precat fails the engine can suck the crap back into the engine and...bang
(it happend on a car i know of....)but i'm not that 'up' on MR2 MK3 knowledge
