Chassis corrosion !

Visited Peninsula last week , partly to see the Wedge which will be home soon (Hopefully !) and also for a 12k service on the 94 Chimaera .
Despite regular cleaning and also waxoyl , doom and gloom , the outriggers have gone at the rear of the front wheel arches . As this is within 12" of a body mounting .........an MOT failure ! So get cleaning !
Admittedly , it is January 94 , and has done 83k .
Looks like I'm just going to be swapping one body off for another .... and another year of arguments with the Mrs about who gets the Tiv !!
Anybody know a good mortgage broker ?

Body off , and all that goes with it , about £2.5k , plus whatever little "extras " I decide to do while its all exposed . Little things like , re con diff , top diff bushes ( Already upgraded shocks and brakes !)Oh , and after 83k ,I don't suppose a respray would go amiss .
It was the daughters 21st birthday later this year ( On top of her Uni fees !) but it is CANCELLED ! The Tivs are more important !

Sorry to hear about your chassis problems. Its a shame if its definitely a body off job.
I have a 94 model and spend the best part of 3 months worth of weekends earlier this year sorting out the chassis. Fortunately mine was only light surface rust, so ginder/wirebrush/etc and hammerite and its now ok.
I have always thought that the powder coating is just not good enough for the chassis protection. specially when you get stone chips and water gets at the metal, rust starts and it just runs underneath the coating
If only tvr galvanized it....

Had a discussion about the merits of Waxoil with a neighbour recently (also a TVR owner) who, like me, was previously an MG owner. It was standard procedure to apply Waxoil to the insides of the sills and 'chassis' box-sections of MGs and everything else by drilling holes and using the gadget supplied with the Waxoil kit (a long tube with a spray nozzle at the end) spray inside the cavities, then sealing the holes with plugs supplied.
Now, I wonder whether the same could be done with TVR chassis tubes, as often the rust develops from inside out, therefore no amount of Hammerite on the outside will prevent rusting.

On my first TVR, a 96 P 4.0HC and had a look at the chasis in the back of the front wheel arches the other day whilst cleaning it. They looked a little corroded. Should I be wire brushing this off now and hammeriting? Should I use a rust inhibitor first??
Is there anywhere else on the chasis that would benefit from this?

Extremely distressed to hear your tragic news, but equally relieved that you decided not to part with the vehicle a while back... for there is only one thing in life worse than one's wife attempting to preserve one's family jewels in a pickling jar... and that's having a very large Constable over-tightening them with a rusty torque wrench!
(Not that either of us would have seen this terrible discovery coming, but old traditions die hard and certain reputations need to be upheld!!)
Only jesting and I sincerely hope both types of pain are bearable. (ie:- Financial and the "I told you so" treatment).

She's everything I hoped for and more. We are taking a romantic break to Vingt Quatre Heures Du Mans, then on to the Loire Valley. Spookily enough it's her 7th Birthday on the Saturday of the race... it will be a surreal sight indeed to see 8 hairy arsed drunken Coppers standing around a car singing 'Happy Birthday', but I've ordered the cake now, so it WILL happen!!
I hope your 'big refurb job' is ready very soon, then perhaps we can R.V. for a spa water or two.

I was thinking about doing this to mine this year, as it was fairly standard practice to do it to classic landrovers.. as you say, the rust from the inside to outside only gets detected when its too late.
Other than waxoyl, what about half a pint of engine oil.. it would get chucked around a bit more effectively than the waxoyl which tends to set quite quickly..? any thoughts..?

I am not a lover of Hammerite, just need to look at my back gate to convince me that I would like to try something new.

Anyone know of a kind soul that would let me borrow their ramp or pit in the Lincs / Cambs / Notts / Leics areas?? It would save me a several weekends work!!

George, your question may get overlooked in this post!
Might be worth a post on it's own with a mention of the product in the title!
The ramp request again the same.
I would also suggest using the TVR general gassing as it has a larger audience.
Hope you strike it lucky.
