Hi first time on this forum wavey .I have been looking at areodeck as a comuting / pratical wagon as it also seems capable of providing some entertainment on work run .I have no idea though ,how reliable (suspect v good) running cost, is there anything to beware of etc .I would be grateful for eny advice you could give me .The car in question is 1999 fsh 46k for 3K .

Hi Andy,

I have owned a couple of these over the years and they are fantastic. Absolutely bomb-proof reliability, very quick and plenty of room.
My first was a company car some years ago and I drove it (hard) for nearly 80,000 miles in a couple of years. Not a single thing went wrong, barring an exhaust sensor replaced under warranty.
My second was my own and I "played" wit it a bit - intake, exhaust and v-tec timing, which made it into a bit of a "type-R estate".

If you like driving fast, it needs stiffer springs (and shocks if you go on track). Also, a v-tec controller can help to make the engine pull better from lower revs (typical v-tec power kicks in just before 6000rpm)

Otherwise, I think this is a much overlooked, super, quick, Q-car. Price is a bit high, but you can negotiate. Good luck!!

Thanks for the info have seen a few more advertised and i now going for some test drives . Fanceid something more intresting for the daily rat run , . The tunning options sound intresting but better finish one befor i start another.

awesome cars, used mine on track quite a bit, bombproof reliability, bar sticky rear calipers and making sure the cambelt, tappets and oil are done to schedule.

i fitted KYB AGX, Platimex springs (similar to Eibach), but one of the best cheap mods was a Rover ZS rear ARB, which killed all understeeer.

engine wise it was decatted, decent Superspint manifold, resonator box removed.

oh, and a short ratio box from an Integra Type R smile (long ratios are the car's worse fault)

the result was an estate that would happily live with std ITRs on track, and very nearly in a straight line, but still looked like your grandad's car!

just thought that you wanted some practical stuff too...


MPG would range between 270 - 350 per tank, depending on driving and conditions, so i suppose I averaged about 33 mpg, not bad considering my driving style. With the cat and std manifold back on you could add a few MPG to that.

with the seats down you could tons of stuff in, i regularly would pile 3 mountain bikes in on top of one another.

comfort wise, the car is really easy to get comfy in, and a nice enough place to spend time in.

steering could have more feel, but it's not that bad, and faithful. the gearbox is possibly one of the best you'll ever use as far as feel is concerned, and brakes are strong too. hondarevolutions forum has tons of info on them

with that mileage, I don't think you'll get a more reliable transport - a mate has bought mine, and it's still going strong with nothing beside usual wear and tear stuff in the last 20k since he bought it, and that was after my 30k of hard driving and several track days

Looks like you have sold me on it. got 2 days off to sort out which is the one for me bit of traveling required to see the ones i fancy .The one i have tried I rather like but need more expirence of the model to make shore its all as it should be. Thanks again for your help clap

I've got a '98 1.6i ES. Mine was to be a practical car without much consideration to entertainment. The car has been completely reliable. A couple of equipment faults: boot locking motor and blower mixer cable came off. I've had a wheel bearing go and a caliper seize. Bizzarely, in the first week I owned the car both head light bulbs and one side light bulb went, all at separate times and none have gone in the two years since!

Anyway no major problems and it's never failed to start. I get 36 MPG pretty consistently. Torque steer was terrible on the tyres it came with, but when I recently replaced these it was much better. I don't know how the VTI manages to put the power down though, I don't know if it has a different diff. For me the reduced fuel economy and increased insurance put me off the 1.8.

I would have gone for the 1.5, but they are hard to find with aircon, according to the specs, they are more powerful and more economical than the non-VTEC 1.6. They're also cheaper to insure and tax.

Space in the boot and front is good, a little tight in the rear. Seats are good and the driving position is good. Gear change and clutch operate nicely, brakes are okay, steering is lacking in feel and mine will drift left or right depending where I set the wheel! I suspect the toe in isn't set too well!
