S3 Front suspension - Springs
Discussion
Folks,
anyone know where there are replacement springs available......seem to be dificult to track down ! Alternatively anyone used replacement shox/springs from Tower View?
My V8S was used as the development mule for the V8S setup, don't know whether they have developed a separate setup for the V6 S. I thought they were a good medium price damper that is just what you want for normal road use. Not the best setup money can buy, but then there's really no limit to how much you could spend for the ultimate setup. One thing you will find for almost all the aftermarket suppliers, is they offer single rate springs rather than the rising rate springs that came as standard. They are normally advertised as uprated because they're stiffer, but because they aren't rising rate the net effect is that they are very similar to the original springs in terms of ride comfort and handling.
www.castleSPORT.com sourced some replacements for my S4 recently.
As Peter says, the Tower View GAZ spring/damper set up is good for road (& track day) use, and the ease of adjustment is very useful. One of my dampers was faulty (squeaking) , but was replaced under waranty. I've had them on all round for 18 months. Of course the new springs mean less grounding, which is more than useful with an S.

i spoke to someone at GAZ shocks about this and they recommended the following for the S3 as direct replacements
Front springs 7.5 inch by 400lbs
Rear springs 9 inch by 300lbs
contacted rally design ( www.raldes.co.uk/ ) who quoted 10.50 each + vat for the front springs but do a 7 inch or 8 inch only not a 7.5 inch spring
don't think half inch will make that much difference
(i know theres a joke in there somewhere)
have part numbers for GAZ shocks as well if interested
For the more adventurous driver, Joolz from Joospeed has been organising Nitrons for the S. Have got some details to hand somwhere if I could only just get my PC sorted out.. :thwackssideofit:
Incidentally, for those with crushed pipes due to ground clearance, just had a quote from an exhaust manufacturer in town of about £100 to pop the crush out and put a skid plate under it. Expect it will be a bit more when I come to get it done, (plus the dreaded VAT), but its not too pricey I suppose..

shocks as follows;
fronts- GP8-2286
rear- GP7-2286
springs;
front- RD1195/8. 2.25 BY 8INCH BY 400LB
REAR- RD1191/9. 2.25 BY 9 INCH BY 300LB
SHOCKS HAVE HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT AND REBOUND/DAMPING ADJUSTER
it was actually £358.39 all in for these to your door.
i suppose you could change the spring ratings to your own spec.
hope this helps
cheers

Do you have stainless manifolds ??
If not, and you have the originals, then the original front pipes are about £12 each.

How easy were these to adjust and set up?
Don't mind changing the springs and dampers (done it on previous motors) but feel a bit daunted about the adjustable bit - whats the chance of completly messing it up? (and needing to spend even more cash to sort it!)
Cheers
