When I see adverts for personal plates, what does "on retention" mean ?

Not currently on a car, but on a 'retention' certificate.

It also means that the plate can be put ('assigned') to another car without further payment, I think. Having been through the private plate mularky once, my conclusions are that it's ludicrously complicated and expensive (especially if you change your car often) and wouldn't bother again.

No, it's not so bad. I put my plate on retention for about four years.

It cost me the £80 standard transfer fee up front when I put it on retention, then £25 a year to keep it there. When I got the Griff, it cost nothing to allocate the plate to the car as I had already paid it when I first put it on retention.

Worth doing if you like the plate.
