Well after coming home last night I decided to nip back out for something only to find all the coolant on the ground. It was peeing out it! Think it is a heater hose at the back of the engine.

Tow truck picked her up today and after about 10 phone calls, I found a Vauxhall dealer new what kind of car it was and could do the work.... what a joke!

Anyway I'm totally pi55ed off and have had the car 1 month today!
On the up side I've got a SAAB Aero just now....for how long who knows!!!

Sorry to hear that. I hope it gets fixed quickly.

When my big end failed earlier in the year I counted myself very lucky that I broke down only about 10 miles from Picador and was able to tell the very nice AA man where I wanted it taken.

known problem with the heater hose at the rear of the engine, quite a few on here have had the problem. Who did you ship car to if you don't mind me asking?

Thats good too know... (slight sigh of relief)
It's off to Arnolds in Hamilton Road... yes I know I wouldn't really choose them but I was by the point of caring by that stage.

...Anyone want to buy a Monaro?

Stick with it matey! Was similarly despondent a few months back when mine needed new discs. Got the run around from the dealer doing the work and looked seriously at a new Audi to replace it. The love affair was as strong as ever on the ride home once I'd collected it.

I'm sure even Arnold's guys can fit a new hose without cocking it up too badly. I'd have asked to borrow their VXR8 demo car while they have your car in for repair. Problem with dealers is getting Vauxhall to supply the parts and pay for warranty work - unless its through a Monaro dealership - they have to have a mechanic attend a 2 day course or something to become an expert.

They had to apparently phone Vauxhall to get the thumbs up to do the work. Although this was the same Vauxhall who were pointing the AA guy to take the car elsewhere.... I feel a letter coming on.

Interesting to hear of a common problem. Mine is 3 years old, although I've only had it 6 weeks, so I'm thinking good old fashioned preventative maintenance is in order Is there anything I can do to prevent the possibility of this happening? Is it a case of just tightening the hoseclips? Anything else I can shore up while I'm at it?

After reading about other peeps having the same problem I had a look at mine up on a local college's ramps not long after picking it up last year, and made the necessary adjustments to tighted the hoses up a little just in case wink

Well I've just had a look around mine, and all the hoses seem well away from any sharp bits. One of the hoses had extra padding wrapped around it, so maybe it's already been sorted. Out of interest would this affect all engines? Mine's a 5.7 VXR, but presumably it'll be a bit different from the 6.0s.

Gents,
I've been regularly following this forum for well over a year now and I've found it very informative and interesting. However, I seem to of missed this topic previously regarding the heater hoses as one of the Monaro's faults.
I've just been out to check my car (a Blue CV8) and have found a disaster waiting to happen. Before I owned a 'proper' production car, I owned a Marcos with a nice 'big' 4.5 litre V8 for 9 years as my everyday car. A Marcos is considered as an on-going project and is full of little surprises such as this aforementioned topic.
I was extremely surprised to find such a shoddy installation of the heater hoses on the Monaro. They seem to be getting attacked from all sides. Firstly, the rear face of the back of the right hand cylinder head is very sharp and is completely untouched after it has been machined at the factory. As mentioned in this thread there is a nylon anti-chaffing sleeve over both hoses, but these offer very little protection against the razer sharp edge of the cylinder head. On my car I found that the cylinder head had gone straight through the sleeve on the bottom hose and had pretty much cut through the first layer of the dual wall hose; I don't think it would of lasted much more. The other things that are having a good chew at the hoses are the clutch master cylinder hard line and one of the ABS brake lines. However, these aren't moving as much as the engine so they're not so much of a worry.

To fix the problem I removed the two original ty-wraps and separated the hoses. There are two fuel lines immediately behind the hoses mounted on the bulkhead and I've ty-wrapped both hoses to these to pull them away from the cylinder head.

It seems that the installation of the heater hoses was a bit of an after thought as other pipes are protected well in the engine bay, e.g. the brake servo hose has an extra layer over it where it passes over the heater hoses.

I suggest everyone checks their cars, if they haven't already, as I think this area is pretty much the same on all models and is a failure waiting to happen.

Sorry to go over old topics, but this was quite a surprise to me and I find it a little concerning that something as simple as this could happen on a production car.

I posted originally about the sharp eges on the cylinder-head and indeed agree that an elasticated sock is shockingly poor protection. The manufacturer's after thought fix of a sticky patch over the sharp edges still puts pressure on the hoses in a space that cannot afford another intrusion within an extremely narrow area.

I can let you guess what I'll be doing when I get the car back!
I have a half written letter to Vauxhall too as IMO this is a total product recall. 10p worth of prevention as opposed to a few hours for someone to fix it....with the chance of reoccurance.

Ditto.

If any of you haven't checked this already, you really should.

hmmm, just checked under the bonnet and found the cylinder head eating its way through the 'sock' on the heater pipes. I used a black tywrap to loosly pull the two pipes away from the block toward the bulkhead. I'll keep an eye on it as i like to look under the bonnet regularly, in admiration of 6 ltr. tee hee.
