1990 Mini
apparently had some bolts on the flywheel loose,

how likely is it, they work loose on their own,

is the answer never BTW?

All the bolts on the fly wheel have bend up washers. If thay have not been bent up the bolts may come lose. I have yet to see this on a mini but it is posible. Regards Dan

Thanks,
Engine came as a built up item but with a number of items either missing or not fitted properly, so that might be relevant. Thanks

your flywheel will be a verto, so it does have bolts which can come loose, but usually only if its been undone before.

there are 6 that hold the flywheel to the centre hub which are threadlocked in, i have seen these come undone, but only ever on mighty minis, you need to remove the assembly to see these.

there are another 6 (i think) that hold the pressure plate on, ive see the odd one of these fall out on the mightys, but normally they just clatter a bit if the do. you can check these with the flywheel still in and on the crank.

then of course there is the big one, this only ever comes undone if some one has been cak handed putting it back on.

normal cause is either fitting the locating washer 180 deg out (hard to do but not impossible) which will bruise the threads on the bolt as it goes in, this then gives a false torque reading.

the other cause is using the bolt more than once, as the bolt 'should' stop in the same place, the washer (whichis welded to it) will always nearly stop in the same place, so soon becomes ratty and usless at locking the bolt off.

the other cause of verto bolts unwinding is people bashing the flywheels off through the starter hole, all this does is bend the spring, which in turns sets a viibration up, which in turn throws the bolt out.......

the normal sign of the centre bolt coming loose is the clutch pedal goes rock hard as it bears up against the thrust washer, 9 times out of 10 its game over for the end of the crank at this point tho.......

hope this helps
