The wife's Paul Smith LE has 145/70/12 tyres fitted to the standard Rover alloy wheels. Can I fit 165/60 R12 tyres to these wheels, or will there be clearance problems?

165/60/12 on the original rover wheels are a direct fit. Fit 5mm thick spacers at the rear (per the original John Cooper Pack) to ensure full clearance when loaded with extra bodies.

They'll transform the car - just you'll have to fit neg camber arms and rear brackets... then lower it a tad... then... etc ... etc hehe

Thanks for the speedy replies.

MoT due next week and the tyres are borderline so I might as well fit something better than the standard Pirellis.

You can get away with 165 with genuine alloys as long as the suspension has not dropped at the front, you might need to put some shims behind the teardrop subframe mounts.

If you want to put some bigger tyres without any work Falken do a 155 which i put on my dads mini with no problems.
