Silly question...
Does a 1100cc metro engine fit straight in a mini?

you will need to change the engine mount on the spedo drive side , other than that it will be a straightforward fit.

Thanks for the response however I am not so sure as I went to see one today and the inlet and outlet are on the front & back of the block but on my mini they are both at the back???

That's because you're talking about a 'k'series engine and NO it won't fit straight in.
