Hey guys, thinking of doing my driving licence and getting a Mini for the four months i'm off University over the summer (I was learning to drive a while ago, but the driving instructor was a pratt and then when I had the money again, I was about to go to London for University so not much point in having a car there!). Anyway, I was wondering what a Mini is like for a first car? Also, what sort of price could I expect to pay for one? I'm not really looking for a pristine one, as long as it runs that's fine by me, I plan to repaint it anyway, and the age of it doesn't bother me either, as an old car nut the older the better really!

Cheers, Rob

My first car was a Mini.. and my second too!

It'll teach you a lot about how cars work, 'cos you'll more than likely have to fix something on it at some point!

Sounds good to me - i'd hate to have a car I wouldn't be able to get my hands dirty on! I'm one of those people who love finding out how things work, so although at the minute I know next to nothing about how cars work (plenty about planes though if you ever have a broken Spitfire!), hopefully a Mini will also give me some practical experience in finding out and a good reason to buy a tool set

Hi I have had 5 minis over the years (and still have one now). Very cheep to run and for parts. You are probably looking to spend at least £1000 to get a reasonable car depending on model but 2-3K
would be better. In my opinion the most important thing to look at is the body work. It is worth looking to join a mini clubs (normally less than £20 a year) there are a lot of clubs around. Also take
a look at some of the magazine Mini World etc. Hope this help.

Dan

PS loved driving all my minis.

Before buying one, go join ideally your local club, for 3 simple reasons:

1. Make friends who know about minis (that is not intended as an insult!!)
2. They will know of cars for sale that may be in your price bracket.
3. If you go to look at one, take one of them with you to have a look and check over the car, they could inform you of any potential work that needs doing.

Tips if you buy one:

1. keep tools in car!!
2. service it properly, buy a haynes book and find out.
3. Learn to weld.

I've had five Mini's over the years, and bought my son his first one when he passed his test in Feb.

He loves it, more street cred than the normal boxessmile

You have to look after them though, regular oil changes and grease the bits that need greasing every 3k ish.

Its my sons car, but I seem to spend most of the time spanneringbiggrin

your not wrong about minis getting into ur blood im now on my 2nd mini, the 1st i stripped down to shell and replaced every panel that i could, reconditioned a 1300 metro engine and front subframe , i bought shit loads of bits but didnt get chance put it all back together. i got my 2nd last week mint condition 1275gt of a old lady for £675 i cudnt believe my luck. ive reupholstered my door cards in leather with a chrome strip along with the back cards and speaker shelf she looks fantastic. And today she got her STAGE 1 upgrade which included K&N breathers and carb filter, original mini cooper inlet manifold, Ashley comp manifold and system with a 3" center exit chrome tail pipe(which wont go in the f*~@ing center and im pissed off) but other than that it sound amazing with a very noticable power gain (apparently 25% more power but we will leave that for the dyno to judge) .....long live the mini......
