Hi,

I'm looking into buying a jap import S2000 99' (its already oin the uk). I've found one with a V5, tax and MOT. Its got a rear fog light and Potenzas on the rear wheels.

Am i correct in thinking that this means its passed the SVA tests and its completely legal/legit? I dont think the seller has imported it through a company.

The speedo still reads in kmph and has no service manual or books (i know it'll be in japanese).

What do you people think?

thanks in advance

Work out how much you'll save by buying an import and compare it to the risk of the car being an unmaintained shed. In the end it's a judgement call. How much contingency have you got if it all goes horribly wrong?

I'm a living breathing proof that if you can't afford a mint one you shouldn't even consider buying a performance car.

How much cheaper are the imports vs a uk car?

P.S My MY04 has a button that changes the dash from mph to kph and back - I think the early cars have it too.

If it's got a V5 it must be registered and that's the last stage of getting an import road legal so yes it'll have an SVA and be road legal.

I don't really understand the negativity of some folk towards imports (that's not a dig, you're all entitled to your opinions!). I've had experience of 50+ imports and as far as I know, only 2 have had any major problems, one a Pajero that blew a head gasket shortly after arriving, and one a Scooby that gave up after being run on shitty UK standard unleaded.

Obviously there is an element of risk with buying a car with no SH as opposed to one with FSH, but there's no more with an import (especially one that's already in the UK and that you can see and test drive) over a UK 2nd hand car with part or no SH.

My experience with imports is that a good one is pretty much always in better condition than a good UK one.

My advice is go to the S2K owner forum and get some buyers guide advice, then go view the car, thoroughly test drive it, and if you think it's a good car, it probably is.

Just my 2p!
