Hello Oz PHers.

A friend and I have hired a couple of bikes from Sydney for an overnight rideout on the 27/28 December.

Any recommendtaions on (BiB free) roads, or places that are worth a look?

Cheers

Welcome to Oz!

There are a few good rides out from Sydney but most main roads will have BiB about at this time of year. Avoid the Pacific Highway like the plague as it crawls with highway patrol and bad drivers. You could try going out to Mudgee (accomodation could be tough) then back up to Golden Highway and back to Sydney via Putty Road. A good ride is up to Gloucester and beyond up Thunderbolts Way (worth it for the name). A good ride takes you to Walcha north of Gloucester. Good pub for a meal and a motel for accommodation.

Many side roads (and some mains) are dirt - ok on a GS or such but not so hot for road bikes. No cops though!

Remember to take lots of water to drink. Today is cool but it can be very hot riding the bike here at this time - mind you the weather has been so crap of late I wonder if I should not be back in Edinburgh! Serves me right for moving to the beach.

Coonabarabran (about six hours north west of Sydney) is worth a ride but it's a fair trip. There is a great national park there plus observatory and some of the best lamb chops ever in the pub! You will see country Australia then and it's worth it.

Let me know if you need more info etc and have a good Christmas.

Yep take lots and lots of water along....I think the next few days are going to be getting up to 40ish. If your riding in t-shirts use a heap of suncream....burn time will be about 5 minutes.

A point worth remembering...until we are well in to the new year 'double demerits' apply and the police really crack down over the xmas period. Obviously points wont matter so much but you might get your license taken off of you or slapped with a heavy fine.
