Water Pump

The water pump on my sons mini has started to squeel. I only replaced the pump about a year ago.

Are they prone to failure, or have we just been unlucky.

first thing i'd check is that its not the fan belt slipping. other than that i'd say if it's definately the pump, then you've been a little unlucky as generally pumps these days generally give quite a few years service.

Its not the fan belt, I've re-adjusted it. I can hear the water pump squeaking.

I'm surprised it's gone so soon. they usually last a lot longer were did you get it from?

Make sure the replacement has a cast impellor, not one made from pressed steel bits. Also check the clearance between the impellor and the block casting. Sometimes the impellor can just touch the block and it can help to clean around the block where the pump fits with a light file and emory cloth before fitting. I always do that just as a precaution. Make sure the location dowels are fitted to the block/pump casing as well.
