Hi there im new on this site, just thought it wud be a gud way of picking a couple of ur brains on a few things for fiesta xr2i. Im olny 20 as you all know trying to insure a car is hard enough let alone modify it. I own a 1990 Hreg version with the old CVH 8v type engine. Basically what I want to know, is it possibe instead of changing the whole engine for the RS turbo spec, would it be possible to just fit a turbo to the 8v original engine?? or would the engne not be able cope?? even if a few things had to be changed etc??
Cheers for your time John.

Not worth the hassle, quicker and cheaper to get an RST block and loom. Have a look at xrtwo.com in the For Sale section, there's a few people breaking cars, you'll need to sign up to view it. I'd say have a look at Passionford but last time I checked they wanted money off me for access into the areas I wanted to have a look at

Step 1 is check the insurance...

At 20 they are really going to pile on the £££ I'm afraid.

good advice - at 20 i paid £1400 for a 1.0 austin metro (city with checked brown seats!!) which i paid £500 for although im in northern ireland and insurance tends to be quite a bit more expensive due to our claim culture!!!

You'd hate to do all the work then find either it would be way too expensive or even if any insurance company would touch you..

I had friends who bought the cheapest car they could find to insure (which provided cover for driving other cars) along with an older performance car which was eligable for classic insurance, taxed it and insured it in their fathers name then drove it under third party insurance on their own policy. Although this was 15 years ago, i imaging those loopholes have been well closed by now

Thanks guys. Well the only gud thing is I have 3 years no claims and have already had the xr2i insured under my own name for a year. Its group 14 already and as the RST is only group 15, thought there maybe a chance of me insuring it (Third PFT) at the momoent I still pay a stupid sum of £856. This week some time ill be searching through all the insurance company's for the best price let you who much there wanting to sting me Rip me off. cheers.

Do you actually know if there are any major differences between the two engines other than the turbo?
Would a T2 turbo not just fit straight on? cheers

It's not just a case of whacking a turbo on it really, you'd have to consider compression, pistons, con rods, intercoolers, head gasket, ECU's, gearbox, diffs, whether you'd need LSD etc

To do it properly and reliably I'd guesstimate you're looking at a grand, maybe a bit less, depending on whether you're doing the work yourself or paying garage rates and the condition of the engine.

Your other (and possibly better) option would be to sell the XR2i and just buy an RST instead.

I was thinking about doing that but ive spent so much time doing up the body work to a pretty respectable standard my self I dnt want to see it go lol. Ive just had 2 new front wings added and a new RST body kit fitted and sprayed. Idealy I would love to have a non turbo'd 2.0L zetec lump for a while but because its an old CVH type ive been told theres a fair bit of money and work involoved.
Dont i wish id gotta a later zetec model...

www.quantums.info

Take a look around there at ZVH/Zetec conversions, not Mk3 specific but would give you an idea of the work involved

agreed, and also put fueling into the equation, so probably a higher flow fuel pump and larger injectors, and paying an engine tuner to set it all up correctly for you.

also, I doubt your brakes will be up to the job either, so they will also need uprating.

a grand? and the rest.

If you really insist on keeping your shell, then your best bet would be to strip your engine etc out, sell it, and put that money towards a complete second hand RST engine, loom, ecu, intercooler etc.

given the cost, time and hassle of doing this, dont you think it would be less hassle just to sell your car and buy an RST?

Don't waste your money. Sell the car you have and use the extra money you'd blow on mods on a better car as it came from the factory.

Cheers for the advise guys.. one more question how much do you think ill get for the car? its H reg radiant red the car has only done 62,000 miles from new and I have evry single MOT, reciept, Police check and TAX disc since new, with 4 owners 2 of which being women. The Head was skimmed with a new piston and a new kent cam put in 1k ago, new water pump, rad, batt, plugs and leads. It has had a brand new set of PI suspension all round even tho I have only managed to get round to fitting the front to shockers and springs. Also taking about brakes a brand new set of black dimond combo discs with green stuff pads.A full Magnax 3" exhaust system and 15" RST 7 spoke allows which are in VGC and have only one scratch on.

Does any1 know how to upload pictures on to here??

Im pretty sure you can still do this. I think many insurance policies wont cover you to drive other peoples cars until you are 25 though, perhaps this is their way of trying to minimise exploitation of this loophope.

Besides, being covered 3rd party only is a major downside, which is not ideal when driving a car youve spent several grand or more on. not a risk I would take myself.

btw putting your mum or dad put on as a named driver usually reduces the premium a bit, oddly enough. Its worth getting a quote with and without them on the insurance to see if makes a difference. Putting the wife on dropped mine by about 50 quid I think, quite a saving on a 380 quid premium

It's possible smile I've looked into it with the Quantum but it'd also involve a bit of work my side as well

To the question on what the XR2i's worth, wouldnt like to say without knowing condition. If it were me, I'd take the upgrades off it and flog them on ebay, then sell a standard car or break the whole lot (if you've got a few spanners and some time to be without a car that is)

To post images, host it on a photo site like imageshack, upload a pic then copy the URL it gives you into code, so

When you are looking at the picture on the web which you want to post here, right click and copy the address.

Then post on here like this, using square brackets instead of curly...... Put the URL you cut above into the gap....

{pic} insert url here..... {/pic}
