alloy sierra uprights???
Discussion
it's a common misconception that the ali versions must be lighter.
the ali ones for the cortina replacement are actually the same weight more or less but people use them because they eliminate the ackerman effect inherent in the standard cortina ones. however, you can usually elinate this through general suspension set up anyway.
if you're looking to save weight, don't bother with the ali uprights but do go for ali hubs, calipers and shocks.

The alloy Cortina replacements are a bit pointless, as said, but the Sierra uprights are quite a bit heavier to start with so the alloy ones do save some weight. However, I'd like to know what sort of testing and certification they have been through, an upright is quite highly stressed.
I just got off the phone from MNR who used to make alloy sierra uprights. He tells me that they stopped for two reasons - 1 beacuse there was little demand and 2 because the sierra geometry is so inferior to the cortina geometry. According to him the swap to cortina geometry is worth 2 seconds a lap around Donnington.
So.... you might be better off looking to change to a cortina upright. Anyone know how easy the conversion is on a Fisher Fury?

There is a difference between the ali cortina uprights sold by westfield, mnr, rallydesign etc compared to the standard cast iron cortina uprights but it wont make you 2 secs quicker anywhere. It corrects the inherent ackerman angle in the cast iron upright but you can effectively dial this out anyway by playing with the suspension settings (camber/castor etc.)The effect would be to create less understeer and more steering feel as one wheel is no longer trying to drive a different line around the corner. The question was sierra to cortina uprights... I'd be interested in the answer if anyone knows.custardtart said:

I thought this did answer the question, the other stuff is just what happens as threads evolve. Uprights need to be strong not light. I've seen a few ali uprights fail (not nice) but never seen a cast iron one.if you're looking to save weight, don't bother with the ali uprights but do go for ali hubs, calipers and shocks.
If they still want to try and find them I would suggest trying Burton Power & Rally Design.

The question was sierra to cortina uprights... I'd be interested in the answer if anyone knows.OP question was if there were ali replacements because the siera's are heavy - the heavy bit's the point!!!! If the OP had bothered to come back with a "well I know that but I still want replacements because...." then I'm sure everyone who made useful contributions would've then pointed them in the right direction.
You don't always get the answer you want or were expecting.
Custardtart - cheers for the info - however, just to clarify, MNR claimed that the geometry change from sierra to cortina was what made the 2 secs difference rather than from standard cortina to their alloy cortina ones.
Do you still think that is a bold claim (BS) If there really is that much of a difference is it worth swapping to cortina uprights and how easy is it to do?
I did read somewhere that Mel at Raw advises the use of Capri uprights, but perhaps I'm just mudying already murkt waters....

Changing from sierra to cortina won't make 2 secs difference if done on its own. It's just a really broad statement and impossible to quantify. However, there's a number of suspensions variables which when adjusted properly could make that difference (tyres, springs, shocks, camber, castor, anti roll bars etc.) when compared to a car where all the variables are out of sinc with each other. Sadly, it's just not that simple and does vary depending on what car you're talking about. On the plus side it's really easy to swap from sierra to cortina uprights if you decide you want to (cast cortina's are approx 1kg lighter than sierra ones) but you may need to change wishbones and hubs too.Do you still think that is a bold claim (BS) If there really is that much of a difference is it worth swapping to cortina uprights and how easy is it to do?

I guess I was banging on a bit about the weight issue but lots of people do think they can save weight by using ali uprights and whilst you can save a small amount these are such critical components that saving weight shouldn't be a priority here unless going for absolutely the last 100th's off a lap time. Plus ali uprights arn't cheap so there's a whole host of other ways to save weight first.
BTW just had a quick look on the RAW website and they use Sierra uprights on their Striker.
