MR2, 205 GTI, golf GTI, or other?
Discussion
I posted this in general gassing forum but on reflection i think i should have posted it here. i did get some good advise but i think i will use a MR2 to compete so any advise welcomed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who exhibited their cars at the show on Sunday they made the event. I want a Spyker.
On the way back from the show I rather foolishly (after deciding not to use the quantum 2+2 for track use after all the interest I have had to purchase the car) I agreed to tack part in a new motor series we made up.
The trouble is I have no idea what to car to buy, how to tune it bolt on bits that actualy work etc. In fact apart from being a driving god (in my head) I know very little but i am a quick learner. This is where you boys and girls come into play my secret weapons. At this time it’s probably best to tell you the rules & regulations of the series.
Type of racing.
1, Time trials e.g. track day.
2, Auto testing.
3, Anything else we can think of that will be fun. Not banger racing, toooo scary.
Vehicle regulations.
1, Any car any engine size.
2, Car must have a mot for the event for safety reasons.
3, You can spend as much or as little as you like on safety equipment eg roll cage.
4, The vehicle must not cost more than £500 or £750 with roll cage.
5, You are also allowed to buy a car without a mot and spend money on getting it through the mot.
This money is not included in the budget but cannot include any non standard parts.
6, Tuning parts and in my case labour comes out of the budget.
5, You are allowed to beg borrow and steel anything.
My competition
1, Nick (brother) owns his own garage and will be able to get the car prepared by his staff.
2, Smiler, built his own caterham that went like racing racing dogs b****cks.
3, Phil Sims, Car dealer best friend of a guy that builds race cars for a living.
I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
Any help/advise much appreciated.

You don't say, apart from being a driving god, what type of car your are used to.
Options would include 205 or 309 GTi 1.9, these went well enough out of the box, are light, and have good anchors, oh and handle very well.
You may get a Rev1 MR2 turbo of that or an NA, but it demands a certain driving style to get the best out of it.
If I were involved I would be looking to see if I could pick up a cheap Dutton Pheaton or similar http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUTTON-PHAETON-SERIES-2-NOT-...
this sort of thing although this one is out of your price range.

I have a MK1 MR2 N/A which is a road-legal track car which we also use for the Toyota Sprint series. I am also currently building a second track car to possibly use alongside the existing car or even replace it depending how it all turns out.
We also have a Supercharged MK1 MR2 (import) which is used as a daily drive and occational track day toy - the extra power and slippy diff makes it loads of fun
If you are looking at racing in an MR2, there are a couple of grids this year - 1 dedicated to the MK1 and another run by Rogue Motorsports and the 750 Motor Club which cater for the MK1's & MK2's
