Last time I drove my car in december I had a small bit oil burning in one of the exhausts when I got back. I let it tick over and a couple of minutes later it cleared. I started the car yesterday and it fired up perfectly. It ticked over for about a minute and I gave a blip on the throttle(maybe 2000rpm) and the engine note changed. Normally its quite basey and raspy but it became more high pitched/quieter and did not want to exceed more than 2000-2500 rpm.

Any suggestions please?

Possibly lambda sensor on the way out?

worst case its a turbo

take it for a good hard drive
let it idle for a few minutes
give it a hard rev

if it has blue smoke - the turbo is on its way out

hope this helps

Gadge - if the engine won't rev beyond 2-2.5Krpm would seem to me that something (pos lambda sensor) is telling ECU to shut down/limit the engine. My front turbo seal went and had the symptoms you described, but no inhibiting effect on the engine iteslf.
Another possibility is that the cats have collapsed internally thereby reducing gas flow - exhaust temp will build-up and trigger the lambda sensor to close everything down. Again happened on my first 3R (after only 4K miles!). Took the factory an age to track the problem down to the cats as well!

Reading the post I think he didn't "want to exceed" 2500 rpm not couldn't
