When I got the Monaro last August (56 reg) it had 6000 miles on the clock. The first service was carried out. It appears that the car was in storage for some time. Any ideas where they were kept? Would Vauxhall have changed the oil when it came out of storage ? The reason I asked is that when I found the build date on the car it stated December 04. So only one oil change in three years......Since then the milage is coming up to 12000. Would it be a good idea to change it again just to flush it out? I called sherwoods in Darlington for a basic oil change but the price was about £142.00!!!!! comments appriciated.

Dropping the oil is never a bad idea and if its outside of a standard service then do it yourself. I know garages charge alot for this as the markup on the oil can be extremely high! and with 6ltrs of the stuff it gets expensive.

Costco for Mobil 1, about 1/2 the price of Halfords.

It depends how it was stored. The big problem with storage is that if the car isn't used then seals and other components can dry out reducing their overall life. If you are going to have a car in storage then proper places will start the car usually once a month and leave the engine idling to the point of having the coolant fan kick in.

To be honest oil in an unused car probably isn't such a big deal - it takes a very long time for it to break down.

But as said previously - you can't change the oil too often.

The things that generally muck up your engine oil are:

- water (caused by lots of short runs not getting properly warm)
- extreme heat
- foreign bodies

Given it has been pretty dormant for most of the time, sitting through continual heat cycles (due to the sun), there might have meant some condensation building up and contaminating the oil, but it would only be a small amount. I wouldn't worry, there are far worse things you can do (like gun it from cold).

As stated before, I would keep a close eye on any seals to make sure they are not leaking... and if you had a cam belt, get that changed too wink.
