My first generation MINI has developed a whistling/wind noise at around 70 mph coming from near the top front corner/A pillar on the passenger side. The noise disappears when the air recirculate button is pressed. Anyone got any clues on the cause and how to fix?

2 possible problems...If it just had a microfilter make sure it has been fitted correctly and the cover has been reseated properly-if its an early one it will have screws holding it down(passenger footwell)Possible the cover has snapped at one of the screws.
The other is there is a baulk head seal which seals the heater box to the baulkhead.Sometimes the heater box moves away or the seal fails which allows air to bypass and whistle-this is not easy to replace but can be done without removing the heater box.Theres a plastic cover which can be squeezed out under the bonnet which gives enough room(just).
