I have a mate who has $5K to spend on a good toolset and cabinet etc. I have a friend at a workshop I used to spanner at making some enquiries. Interested in what you guys would rank best to worst in terms of quality... Teng, SnapOn etc? What would you want in that tool set? Any other advice appreciated. I should be able to buy them at trade but if any one has any good contacts then feel free to speak up smile

My two favourites, when playing around in Phil's workshop, are Stahlwille and Facom. They're both fantastic.

Given my lack of skill however some cheap rubbish is generally all I use.

Snap-on has been trading on their reputation for a long time now and the aviation industry won't touch them. OK for workshops but you are paying big for image.
I bought a set of AIGO ring and open end spanners from Sulco used to / may still sell. They have survived horrible abuse and still keep their fitting surfaces in good shape.
Not that any of us would use an adjustable spanner on any of our cars but BAHCO are way ahead and worth the price.
If you want lifetime stuff visit Trade Tools and ask what's good but not brand name. Cost will be lower and you'll be using what most shops round town are seeing for their apprentices. Trade Tools have a reputation to protect and won't screw you over.
I'd be really nervous of anything ex Mitre 10, Bunnings etc even brand name stuff, just going through there shipping bays seems to make it turn to plastercene.

I still have a Motogard tool set of ring and open enders I bought in 1987. They have done very well and show no signs of wear. Ive never splashed out on expensive tools. I think if you were working on large diesel equipment in the bush then you might like a quality set, but for what we people use stuff for, mid-range stuff is fine. If you are not using a 6foot pipe as a lever on your 13mm ring spanner and expect it to hold together, then I wouldnt waste my money.

One of the best buys Ive seen for a while is at Bunnings (yes someone said plastercine!) But go and check out the portable tool chest with the Crescent brandname on it. They have beautifully made spanners, screwdrivers, rachet sets and other stuff in there for $148 - and yes it is quality goods. The rachet drives have some of the best mechanisims Ive seen.

Remember a bad workman always blames his tools.

That is a very cool vid. I ended up watching the whole series tongue out

I remember talking to the manager at the car stereo company in Wellington. The Whittaker brothers were a customer of theirs back then and he was saying they had a fault with their MacF1. They rang the factory, plugged in the modem, the car ran through a series of revs and tada fixed smile

I remember seeing a MacF1 at the Performance Car trackday at Pukekoe many years ago. What a work of art!
