WTB Golf Cabriolet; but Mk1 or Mk3?

The SS7’s moved down to the south coast last year, and part of the master plan was to get a cheap open-top 4 seater for summer running around, boy's trips to Goodwood breakfasts etc. - and maybe even to use for the Le Mans Classic in July.
I’ve been looking at the usual A4/E30 3 series/Saab suspects, but I think in balance a Golf would be the best solution, especially when running costs are factored in, e.g Golf brake discs are about 10p from GSF.
However I’m torn between a late (’90–on) original Mk1 based version, or the later Mk3 Golf based version.
For me, the Mk1 is easily tops in the style stakes, probably a better drive (especially if I can find one with a GTI engine), smaller (so fits better in the garage), will look better with some subtle mods, and if tin worm is kept at bay will probably be cheaper. And a good one will probably keep its value well.
On the other hand, the Mk3 will be younger, easier to driver, safer in an accident, not be so ready to rust, has ABS and bags, and with the 2.0l engine will be quick enough. It also has, so far as I can see, 3 point rear belts, all of which makes it a much easier proposition to sell to Mrs SS7.
From the classifieds here and on Autotrader I can it will be much easier to find one that hasn’t been badly modified, thrashed or crashed has steller mileage.
Any one got any views?

Well for me the mk1 is a great buy.
Its got so much more class and style than the mk3.
I know the mk3 is more safe, user friendly, cheaper, rust free blar blar blar but the mk1 is a classic and suits what you wont it to do.
A great saying i have always loved ... It does what it says on the tin!!
p.s. thought about maybe an mx5?

Deffo Mk1 for me. I'd go careful with the mods though as I think the standard GTi (or Clipper) bodykits are spot on. Anything more just looks OTT.
Thanks. I hadn't planned anything drastic; probably a suspension re-fresh and I've got some 15" Porsche Teledials in the garage too.SS7
I'd go with the Mk 1 as well - at the end of the day, I think they're just "cooler".

With white being the colour du jour, you will also be ultra cool if you get one of the editions that has white wheels, a white grille, white seats and a white hood.
Just a thought, but would you be able to get a more recent South African Citygolf variant that has airbags etc if you are concerned about safety and rust?

Well I'm with you on the clour generally (my new Cayman is white), after 20 years all the triple white Mk1's I've seen are white/brown/grey....With white being the colour du jour, you will also be ultra cool if you get one of the editions that has white wheels, a white grille, white seats and a white hood.

Its always tricky deciding deciding between safety and cool. I love my MKII GTI but its always in the back of my mind when I take the kids in it. Its got all safety features and would be useless in a crash, even at low speeds, with a modern car of any size.
If you saw the crash between a Volvo 740 and a Renault Modus on Fifth Gear you will know what I mean.
Why not go for an Audi Cabriolet, cooler than a MK3 IMO.
